Could someone let me know if there are about in numbers in Youghal, Ballycotton or Cobh these evenings.
I have a good friend in who wants to bring his youngsters fishing, but he's got a fair bit to drive.

Thanks

Blackie,

There were massive numbers passing up in front of Cobh tonight. Numerous big breaks showing on the surface.

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site and only back fishing two months after 15 years. Not a bad year so far. Would like to put the species count on the bottom of the reply to show I'm not just a mackerel basher as they/we seem to be refered to.(how do I do that?)

Live in Dublin, however would be afraid I'd glow in the dark if I was to eat anything from Dublin Bay. If any Mac's are seen within an hours drive love to know.

Ballycastle, North Mayo. About a dozen mad feckers 150 ft up on top of Downpatrick Head were hauling macks up the cliff face yesterday, though the gulls whipped off a good few on the way. They're not as plentiful here either this year, but good sized when you do get them. This time last year they were everywhere, but the size of mice.

Hi all, Newbie here who would love to return to the sport after a long period away. I'd also like to get my son involved as he's four and a half now and would love it. We currently living in Limerick city and would be grateful if anyone could recommend a good mackerel spot. The main requirement is that it would be safe for the young lad (well as safe as you can be ). I understand a good spot will be at least an hour or so away. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello Jack,
Welcome to the site.

I think there's plenty of mack fishing available in Clare, don't know what's nearest to you.

When the macks are plentiful so are the marks plentiful with flying hooks and lead. I have found that getting up early to fish the morning tide is one way to avoid the tight squeeze.

I'm sure you'll find a way to catch with the help of this site.

Not sure if the macks have gone off the boil at the moment? Maybe all the fresh water has pushed them a bit off shore. Any reports out there?

Are early morning high tides just as good as late high tides? Early morning would suit me better but had a notion you wouldn't catch in the morning... don't know where I got the notion from though...

Re: Mackerel reports '09 here.....

bad notion!

early morning with the dawn just as good if not better as the dusk to bring on the fishing

so the early morning HT should not be a problem if they are about

went to rocks near Nolan Park, Dalkey last friday evening for 2 hours. Had the place to myself.....which was nice. caught 5 mack in total. First 3 were quite big but lost one against the rock when lifting up. caught another 2 about an hour later then quiet after that.

Anyway they are there, but not in any numbers yet, so it's just a matter of putting in the hours for now.....

Steve,

Finally some macs in the east. Was it high tide when you caught them or when.

Tides not in line with daylight this weekend but I'll be there at some stage this weekend probably early Sat morn. Might see you there. Were you on feathers or ?

Righthook,
Tide was high at 22:00 and I caught them between 20:00-21:00 (even though I don't really believe tide comes into play there as it's effectively a channel and have got mack here last year at all times of the tide). Got them on feathers - red ones my fav ! Might head up there again this weekend at some stage.

Good luck,
steve

headed to the bullwall area to dig some lug today and had a rod in the car! as you do :)
decided to try for mac for bait rather than buy and!!!! yeah! hooked a few on the bull wall
before darkness around 10pm, rising tide, FT due at 12 midnight.
quite a few guys headed off with a few mack and many more mac-bashers went off with nothing
losing their tackle to the rocks!
no motor cycle helmets needed here as there was room for everyone.
heading out tomorrow night for a session with some of the rusties!
