Ballycotten - 20th July

Some mackerel were taken off Ballycotton Pier Sunday evening.
I was bait fishing off the breakwater - the main pier and breakwater were full of mack bashers but they were having no luck (apart from snagging my lines   ) until about 9.15 pm when a guy landed a mack from the main pier. All the bashers had left the breakwater by that time and I was on my own. A few more macks were caught, including a couple of doubles from the pier.
I decided to have a go at mack bashing - first few casts produced nothing, then I switched feathers - and got a triple. After a few more casts landed a whopper - 41 cm mackerel. I got another three after that - meanwhile the catches off the main pier had died off. I guess the shoal was moving westwards.

I finished up after getting the seventh - happy enough with some fish for tomorrows dinner and a few for bait

Just tried this evening Clifden area, dirty evening, choppy seas, no sign of a mack for 1 hr fishing.

Hello,
Been away from the web for a while.
Before I left I put up this graph:
[img:1584:1223]http://usera.imagecave.com/blackiemc/mackgraph080705jpg.jpg[/img]

At the time this thread had about 14,000 hits, was asking if people thought the fall off in macks was a true feature (I thought it was).

When I get a chance I'll update the graph. I think that this thread could be a useful resource (also for future ref. to compare year to year), but only if it's supported by all the people who view it.

I'll try to go through all shore reports and give a more up to date version of this graph, but please, if you are new, or seasoned, and if you find this thread interesting then please support it. If you are new it's a great chance to get posting I think.

You don't have to be specific about the mark, but sometimes that's ok? (if I'm driving by Kinsale Bridge and I see macks being caught I'll report it here for the benefit of other users of the site).

I have a neighbour, his Dad is very sick, but fished mackerel when he was younger and healthy. I want to bring him fishing again, but I want to be as sure as possible of catching a few macks, I'm watching this thread for the hint to bring him, it's one example of why I think that contributing to this thread benefits fellow anglers (if you want to see other reasons look at the first post on this thread).

Cheers

Venue: Clifden area Co. Galway
Date: First week of August
Time: various
Tide:
Weather: unsettled, gentle swell
Rig: luminous krill imitation rig
Results: Weeks of unsuccessful attempts here resulted in two sessions where macks appeared in the last week or so

I know that macks were quite scarce at times, even from the boat up to a couple of week ago in the area.
