Portaferry 17/11/06

Sat Nov 18, 2006 7:22 pm

People: Jonny no mates

Duration: 18:30 - 23:30

Tide: High about 10pm

Weather: Brass monkey

Bait: Squid,Sandeel,Gulp 100mm Sandeel and mackerel

Rigs: Pulley

Results: Codling,Pollock,Whiting and Coalies

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:

Things started very slow but picked up after the first hour with a few Codling and Whiting to Sandeel. As the evening progressed the fishing improved with a few good sized Pollock(for Co.Down) and a couple of Coalies over 2lb and a constant flow of small fish most of the evening.

After loosing a few rigs I decided to set up Both rods with one hook fished about 4 feet off the bottom. On one I used Sandeel on the other the Gulp Sandeel. The only difference I found was I had to keep renewing the frozen sandeel. The gulp fished just as well either sitting static or on a slow retrieve.I also tried four other types of gulp baits but had no luck with any.
So from me its a thumbs up for the Gulp Sandeel.

Mackers and his mate (sorry head like a sieve) dropped by just before 11 on their way back from Strangford but only had a few fruitful casts before calling it a night.Good to meet you both anyway and no doubt we'll cross paths again before the winters out.

Co Down pollack

Sun Nov 19, 2006 2:14 am

Feel i must come to the defence of my home county. Had a dozen pollack this year from the Co. Down coast all in the 4-5 lb range and numerous fish around 3lb. Last session 2 weeks ago lost 2 much bigger fish within 30 minutes. Once they dive and get into the weed just couldn't move them. Now loaded with 30 lb braid. Next time.

You have to come and give our side of Strangford lough a try I think you'll see where I'm coming from.  In saying that there has to be some good fish knocking about,my problem is finding them.

i would have stayed for a while, but you know how baltic it was.there was a hugh change in wind and temperature in the time it took from leaving strangford and arriving in portaferry ( even the ferry crossing was only approx 2 mins due to the winds ) ....
we will be there again soon,so you never know we may meet up and actually have a bit of banter whilst fishing, rather than standing there talking whilst getting frozen to bits....mind you the weather didn't seem to bother you too much-floatation suit must be doing the job well....
see you soon mate and i hope it is a bit better fishing and weather next time...

Sun Nov 19, 2006 12:58 pm

Oh I,love the suit its a great job only got it last winter prior to that it was just about 300 layers each trip and still freezing the gonads off.My only regret is not going for the two piece as I find the one piece very restrictive when trying bend down to bait up etc.

How do you find the Strangford side of the lough compared to Portaferry for general fishing, tackle loss and current ?

Sun Nov 19, 2006 3:08 pm

in strangford the current was not bad at all.the bait stayed where it was even using 3oz.didn't loss any traces or rigs which is very unusual for me.i found there to be very little weed about.the only down side i found to it is that i find alot more fish normally in portaferry than i have ever found in strangford.....but it could be just me and my dodgy fishing methods and baits..
i think i will stick to portaferry eventhough the wind is a little stronger as it is more open.....portaferry is a bit quicker to get to aswell from ards....

i am sure i'll be back in strangford again sometime, but i reakon i'll be in portaferry alot sooner
