Report:
It breaks my heart to post this but we all knew it was a matter of days before the cod in Youghal would say goodbye for another season. A lot of Fisher folk were out in force and fishing from the Pier upwards and only 3 codling were taken the whole night, and after talking with several local lads that fished there for the week they admitted the fishing over the last few days has gotten very very slack, hence the Cod have moved to deeper waters

Laurence and Myself went to Ennereilly before heading to Youghal to meet up with the East Coast Raiders, Lovely seeing you lads there!! Here’s to fishing with you all soon! Laurence hooked into a nice (flounder 30cm) there and the talk of me blanking started (well that talk started before we left my house to be truthful!!)
Around 4pm we said our goodbyes, and made our way to Cork, cross country, were we meet traffic diversions and road accidents galore!! What should have taken only a matter of a few hours seemed a lifetime in the car and at one point I was going to stop at the nearest body of water just to fish!!
The RAIN started on our arrival …
Eventually we got to our meet up point with Sparkey43 and Kev, we learnt the mark they were fishing off was weeded out but still there was Coalies and small pin whiting to keep them happy, meanwhile Laurence and myself headed to the Rock mark we’ve been talking about all week and met up with Alan (Mr Weights!) from Youghal there, a dangerous mark to get to in wet weather!!
I hooked into a nice size doggie which made an excellent account of itself on the line, I missed one beauty of a bite as I was on the phone with the other lads telling me of nice coalies they were pulling and meanwhile trying to get to my rod and slipped into a massive puddle in my rock boots (which now seriously have to be replaced as the threads are worn away!).
So after a time there, and Alan’s last cast pulling in a beauty of a codling further down the rock mark, we went to meet up with the lads Sparkey43 and Kev, and made our way to Ferrypoint to fish and camp, small diversion into a pub and chipper first, we found ourselves in Ferrypoint, raced the gear out of the car by this time the rain was getting heavier and the gear was letting the rain through..
First cast in Sparkey43 hooked into a nice codling so hopes were up high there was still a few to be got, the lads fished up to LW and retired to bed, were I was still determined with fresh baits that there must be something out there other then crabs.. Not having a watch on me I fished up to HW water again, falling asleep in my Cod Cabin (which remained waterproof throughout the night!! love it!!) 3 times with the rods in my hands was waiting for the rain to easy off to pitch the tent but it was apparent that it wasn’t going too so pitched it up in the pouring rain, got there gear together and went to bed just as daylight started to appear on the horizon. Realized I was soaked through, happened while I was pitching the tent!
Next morning awoke to a very wet and unhappy Laurence outside my tent, the car had locked itself (does that if no one goes near it for a set time!) and Laurence's waterproof gear had been in it, and found out he had to sleep between two puddles in his tent and a pointy rock in his back, no wonder he wasn’t happy!! He fished Ferry Point in the early morning pulling in small flats no bigger then your hand, I fished it and not a tap on the line… but while I was drinking coffee a big old sea trout went swimming lazily by looking for grub, he was old as the back of him was in bits just before his tail, he swam very close to shore so close you could have grabbed him!
So in closing... Although I blanked in Youghal this season for my Youghal Cod, I didn’t blank in friends I made, nor the Craic that was had, in fact I had a ball, and I’m going to miss Youghal. So to all the lads that ventured down the last few months, to the lads we met down there!! I look forward to seeing you all again soon till then TIGHTLINES ALL!! To the Cod that managed to miss my hooks… grow fat…grow big... and see you next season!!! And here’s to 2012!
