Co Down Rock Mark - Again!

Sat Jan 28, 2012 9:20 pm

People: Lonesome me again...

Duration: 2.5 hours

Tide: 1 hr up, 1.5 hr down

Weather: Still and swell free

Lures: Jellies, dropshots and berkley sandeels

Results: 8 Pollock (smallest 1.5lb, biggest 4lb 4oz)

Report: Managed to wangle myself a couple of hours free in the afternoon today so with the weather being oddly perfect (?!) I got the hiking boots on again! Treated myself to a new Grauvell Tecklon Concept Spin 832M from Belfast Angling this week and was dying to christen it. Took a lovely 1.5lb pollock on the first cast - I think me and the rod are going to get along just nicely! 8) Sport died off over the HW slack as per usual but a nice low flying Peregrine Falcon kept me amused til the fish turned on again. The best fish of the day came on my very last cast as I was running out of light and it tipped the scales at 4lb 4oz! Best fish of the year so far for me - not bad for a quick trip to try out the new rod :D :D

another great session, weather you so lucky or have a good knowledge of shore line
i have to suggest that you going surprisely well for this time of the year
just wonder why that size pollack wouldn't stay in any other marks around ireland for this time of the year (may i don't know) :?:
what is so special in your mark
in fact im not try to find out your particular mark, just would it be posible to compare to marks in the west cost and try to cach them there
i mean dephts, sea bed conditions, currents if any, ect
and i have to suggest that im not attacking your post as it could look like
im just imprest,
regards,
Grady

Very lucky indeed mate! But tbh these marks are not always fishable, but when the conditions are right there are still fish there 8) 8)

no worries at all Grady :D For me finding these marks was a combination of studying admiralty charts for deep water close to the shore and once I had an idea for some spots I asked on the forum and got a lot of help from the guys here. I try to stay away from well known marks and fish the most inaccessible places I can find - hence the hiking boots! From diving I've seen big pollock be extremely territorial and regularly see the same fish on a mark year on year so it's likely that heavily fished spots have fewer bigger fish left on them. Deep water, underwater structures and some tide (but not too much!) seem to be the ideal. Best advice I can give is to keep moving as you can be 10 m out on a mark! Hope this helps!

Great fishing. Its good to see someone taking soft plastics, and indeed spinning in general, seriously around here.

Too many think its just something to do while you're waiting for the rod tip to start bouncing.

Agreed! Great way to catch fish although I'm not adverse to tripods myself - just not all of the time. Some great sport to be had out there on the plastics but its a case of take a spinning rod and focus solely on lures. Spinning is pointless if you cant move around.

I've some flies that I tied up 2 or 3 years ago and stuck in a box without ever using them. There are a few prawn/shrimp pattern in there.

I might try them using the dropshot technique down the side of a few piers this summer to see if it works on the bigger wrasse.

Yeah def worth a go nobuzz. Dropshot is great for getting wee small lures deep. Sounds like your not a million miles from the LRF thinking there??

The sidewinders are great, although I use the Berkley sandeels if I can as they have vmc style hooks rather than the aberdeen style you get with sidewinders - I've had them straighten out would you believe?! On the downside they do fall apart after a few fish but thats hardly a bad complaint to have :D

I know the fish can rip apart most jellies, a good hungry pollock and soft jelly  Jelly losses out all the time but what I've done in the past a little super glue and away it goes again, Till the next fish decideds to tear it apart!, but I seen a thing were someone used a soldering iron to mend them and it seemed to work

Snap! It works a treat for when the jelly comes away from the internal lead, always keep some in the bits box - great minds think alike eh?!
