Weather:Strong breeze, dry, very mild.

Bait:Fresh lug, frozen mackerel.

Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers.

Results:5 rockling, 3 codling, 2 flounder, 1 plaice, 1 pin whiting, 1 coalfish, all small.




Report:
I made a spur of the moment decision to go fishing so loaded the car and headed off. I had a bit of bother getting lug as the beds where I usually dig had been ravaged by the storms a while back but eventually I gathered enough. First 2 casts produced a small rockling followed by a larger rockling, things were improving already! It went quiet for an hour and then a 25cm flounder and another 2 rockling turned up, one of the latter being quite fat (picture below), obviously a greedy one as he had taken both baits. Around high tide a small plaice, 3 codling to about 25cm and a pin whiting showed up along with a palm-sized flounder. I had been considering titling the report "Louth Codling" to see how many "bites" I would get on the forum but I suppose that would be a bit like the boy who cried wolf. As the tide began to ebb, the bites slowed and weed became a problem but I managed a coalfish and on my last cast, finished as I started with a rockling. Nothing huge or spectacular but 6 species is quite good for this mark, in fact anything is good for this mark as I get more blanks here than anywhere else. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening out.

Fair play on 6species especially the plaice who must have been on his hols r got lost up the neck of the woods

Do you mind me asking in what part of Louth you were fishing? Dont want to know the exact location just the general area. Fish Dunany/Clogherhead area a lot with a variety of baits and very little luck.

like the lads said, sometimes it can be a barren, fisless wasteland
so the sheer variety of what you got was pretty decent by anyones standards

well done on getting a few species on the louth coastline, i've hit a few marks between greenore and clogerhead this year and have one tiny flounder to show for it, so i'm glad to see your report and get a bit of faith back...

good variety of spesies John, even louth coast is very close to me but im never realy fished there, anyway good going there,well done

Fair play John nice fishing and to catch any fish of the Louth coast is doing well never mind six.... Did a lot of fishing up that way last year but even then it was hard going.... Where you up far into Louth.... Just asking Pm me if you like...

Im going to go out on a limb and say thats not a plaice. Im probably wrong now so correct me if i am but i dont think its a true plaice. If it is can you tell me what the difference is between it and a flounder, ive caught "flounder" like that on beaches in louth and there flounder other then the vivid red spots. This might sound mad but i think there like a hybrid, Has any body else any info on this or am i going mad from looking at rod tips for hours and then convincing myself it cant be a plaice it has to be a flounder?

The orange spots on a plaice are much more vivid than on a flounder (compare the hand-held flounder in my original post) and the under-side of a plaice is sort of semi-transparent while the flounder is a more solid opaque white, there are other differences including bony ridges on the head and differences in tail shape and proportion etc. I suppose it's possible that they hybridise but until tackle shops sell DNA identification kits and on the basis that if it isn't a dab or a flounder it must be a plaice, I'll stick with a plaice.

I see what your saying John, Il keep an open mind the next time im looking at one, ive had four or five of them north of clogher without the bony ridges so thats what was making me question it.
