Co, Sligo. 25 & 27 April 2010 lure caught 8 lb Pollock !!!

Duration: 25th 3 Hrs, 27th 4 Hrs

Tide: Filling,Stranding

Weather: Overcast with the odd shower & light wind

Bait: Condor, jelly worm & Sprat like spinner

Results: 25th: Myself: 4 Pollock, 5 Coalies, 5 Mackerel, Pat: 10 Coaies 2, Pollock, 27th: Myself: 3 Pollock, 4 Coalies 1 Mackerel, Pat: 6 Coalies

Sunday 25th

We decided on a spinning session for a few hours on Sunday evening as the tide & weather was perfect. From the start we were catching small Coalies with a few decent Pollock putting in an appearance,-biggest just under 4lb & myself catching my first Mackerel of the year - great to see them back, and they went down a treat with a few creamy pints of Guinness !!

Tuesday 27th

Having missed a good Pollock on last week’s session I was eager to get something bigger so I tried a spot that has thrown up a few nice fish in the past, and which is best fished first two hours of the stranding tide.

The session was slow with us catching a few small Coalies & a couple of Pollock around the 2 lb mark with one nice lone Mackerel of 41cm. But that was it ‘til the last few casts of the session I belted out the spinner as far as I could & started reeling slowly when I got a very aggressive hit at the lure & bang my rod doubled, was into a very big fish that took off like a torpedo .

It was none stop action diving for the kelp every chance it got & it was very tough to stop from burring in, luckily I kept enough pressure on & just about held it up from the kelp, but the biggest hurdle was yet to come; a few dirty rock ledges, cleared the first few but I felt the line grazing against the edge of one , I was full shore it would snap & be just be another tail of the big fish that got away but luck was on my side & out over the last ledge came a lovely big Pollock .

What a scrap- It never gave up once & took ten minutes to land, what an adrenalin rush, happy days !! She tipped the scales at 8lb (although would have made near double figures if it was caught later in the year!) looked like a fish that was back inshore to fatten up after spawning will be hoping to catch her again when she has a couple of pounds put on during the summer ill be fishing this mark alot during the year !! Went home a happy camper with a sore arm!!
