Report: SUNDAY 17TH JANUARY
after we blanked in donegal on saturday we had an absolute mountain of bait to use up and i thought we could have a bit of sport with the whiting at bangor. k1 and k2 called into see us at home on thier way back from the angling show in belfast (which was aparently the biggest pile of old cack). so we got sorted and arranged to see them at bangor. hopes were high as the last few times we came down here it was a fish a cast :P . but sadly after 4 hours fishing we only had 1 whiting each :? :? :? :? . seemed really odd as the place has been plagued with them recently   . i got home that night and arranged to get out with dawsey after i dropped jordan down to school in the morning. a marathon session was on the cards as he was getting withdrawls as uni had kept him away from the sea for a few weeks

MONDAY 18TH JANUARY
with jordan sent to school and the car re-loaded dawsey and i set off up the antrim coast to see if we could find out where all the bloody fish had gone :x :x :x we hit our huss mark on the way up the coast and blanked at it for 4 hours :( :( so a re-think was in order..... i had enough bait for about 3 days fishing so we decided to hit waterfoot beach and give it a go. (after we filled our faces with a chinese in carnlough  ). we got onto the beach with a bit of daylight left and our hearts sank as we spotted the kelp was about 2 foot deep in places    another fine plan scuppered   . i spotted that there was only 1 guy on the pier so we drove over and got set up and were fishing by 4pm. finally things seemed to be going our way for a change. i got talking to the guy who was fishing and it turned out to be pitviper from the site :P :P . never fails to amaze me just how many die hard anglers from our site that we bump into on our travels    so we had a chat and he left us a pile of bait as he was heading on (cheers man!). bites were coming so often that we only fished 1 rod each for most of the night. the 20cm whiting and coalies were destroying our baits before the rig had even hit the sea bed    . i asked dawsey what time it was, thinking it was about 9pm and it turned out it was actually 10.40pm     . time really does fly when you're having fun. between the whiting and coalie onslaught we got a few other species and were both happy to get a doggie each as they seem to have been really thin on the ground of late. then dawsey landed a dab that appeared to have a straight lateral line :P :P :P :P i thought the jammy git had landed himself a long rough dab.. we inspected it a bit closer and were both convinced it was,,,,,,, thankfully i had taken a few close up pics of him, and on furthur inspection on the computer he turned out just to be a regular dab :? :? :? :? :? . must have been lack of sleep on our part at the mark or something as we never spotted the arch in the lateral line above the pectoral fin    . but it was as clear as day in the pics,, so sorry dawsey     . the night flew by all too quick and despite of drinking a good litre of coffee poor dawsey's eyes were crossing eachother by 3am      . so we decided to call it a day and pack up and head for home. one of the busiest nights in a while, allbeit nothing of any size caught. but great craic all the same :P

The other pier at Bangor at the pickiepark side fishes better in the winter, about half way up it, casting onto a sandy bottom. Its usually plagued with whiting and the odd flounder. 8)

cheers man. i thought they'd all cleared off or something :? :? most of our marks up in the north have been really quiet with the dogs lately. great to see a couple thow :P :P

chrisfeeney30 wrote:ye got some amount of fish the second day! well done..great pics too

thanks chris, as we got to near high tide there seemed to be a massive shoal of whiting and coalies just sitting 30yards off the end of the pier. dawsey broke out his wee spinning rod and got great sport out of them

cheers dave. we always seem to do well when we bring dawsey out with us,,, the first time we had taken him up there the jammy sod got a sea trout   . i wonder what he's doing at the weekend

   no probs man. we must have scoffed down half a pig's worth of bacon and sausage sandwiches   . that wee gas stove is a lifesaver, best £10 i've spent in ages. just a pity the dab turned out to be a regular wee chap :( :( how the heck did we not spot the curve in the lateral line :? :? :? under torchlight it looked straight,,,, we must have checked it 5 times?. the flash from the camera must have highlighted it or something

minty wrote:well done lads good to see waterfoot still fishing well :D :D , cant wait to get back at it again :(

thanks minty. you've been doing more travelling than us lately    have you not had the chance to wet a line in cork or scotland???. you'll have to sort yourself a wee fishing kit and keep it in the back of the jeep for when you're away working

doggie3131 wrote:well done lads, jesus al you were due a good session after the start to the year ye had!i see your friend "bud" was there too :D :D

thanks noel. good old dawsey brought some needed change in fortune that night   that was someone else's bud in the pic, but you'd be surprised just how many different kinds of bud get consumed off the end of that pier at the weekends    i remember fishing there one evening in the summer and chatting to a few lads as i was setting up. i mentioned that i had to move from the beach as it was coming down with weed,,,,, to which one of the lads remarked, "so's ballymena" . took a minute for the penny to drop before i realized we were having 2 different conversations

thanks drew, i think that was dawsey's serious fishing face     either that or the poor guy was so sleep deprived he was just a bit confused as to where he was

nice one gareth. we'll have to give that side a chuck the next time we're down  . we always ment too during the summer, but the other side always fished so well we never bothered

  come on guys spill the beans, what happened

cheers don. ok,, you've twisted my arm. i'll have to elaborate.... poor dawsey had a bit of a Mr Bean moment  . he had set up his wee spinning rod and left it propped up on the barrier behind him. he then baited up his bigger rod with a 1 hook rig and cast for the horizon...... he did'nt notice on the back swing of the pendulum cast that the hook had gotten tangled with the 3 hook flapper on the mini rod   so not only did he send his 1 hook rig to the horizon,,,, the other rod and reel went sailing off too  . thankfully the 2 rigs became tangled togeather as 1 big granny knot and he reeled back in with the mini rod still attached to the end. we had a good chuckle about it once the rod was back on dry land     . so the moral of the story would be, " when you're having a run of stinking luck, bring along a friend so they can have a mishap instead of yourself "

beachcaster wrote:well done lads some nice species there, seems to hold a good stock of fish .

cheers man,,, what can i say, the arms were almost pulled off us with those monsters       honestly think i did me back in      sure, what we lacked in quality we made up for in quantity  . just a pity jordan could'nt have been there as it was his kind of fishing   he would have loved it.

Yeah, we're thinking about it. I'm more keen than Norman is.
There's two this year and I'm not sure which one would be better.
Maybe we could go to both!
What about you, are you thinking of going?

    thanks frank. i forgot to mention that we each had a conger rod out. dawsey was on the 5/0 hooks while i was holding out for the monster with the 10/0 meat hook   sadly i was the only one to get a run,,, and it turned out to be a 25cm pollack who managed to impale himself on the hook when i struck     ,,,, but waste not, want not... he was mangled and went back in as conger bait
