Wexford flounders 22-11-09

Mon Nov 23, 2009 10:52 pm

People:me, mitch, ringo ashley(why cant i have a name like that  )

Duration:approx 12pm-5pm

Tide:falling

Weather:Lets just say it wasnt a gentle breeze

Bait:lug

Rigs:blinged up 3 hook flappers

Results:flounders,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,me,,,1,,,,,,,,,,,ringo,,,,,,,,3,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Mitch,,,,,,,,,,,8 or maybe 9

Report:Met up with the lads at Jack Whites and followed them into deepest Wexford. The wind was howling, it was pelting down rain, the forecast was full of references to gales, force 9 or 10, floods etc but we were more optimistic and convinced ourselves that it mightnt be that bad   . I ditched my own car and transferred the gear to Mitchs more luxurious vehicle, introduced myself to ringo and we continues on to the mark. We had arrived too early with the tide still in so we went on a search of the area for marks for future reference. Sat Nav is a great man in these situations as is 4 wheel drive,,,,,,,,,,,i dont think i'd have found these places in the Ford Focus   . Back to the mark only to find it was still too early so a Full Irish was on the cards and we made our way to the nearest , and only, diner. . There was a beautiful smell of bacon, eggs and mushrooms ,,,,,,,,,,,,well there was until one of the lads at the next table opened his lunchbox, if you get my meaning :? :? Having eaten and drained the fairies at the diner we returned to the mark ,,,,and sat for a while looking out at the weather until Mitch made the first move, opened the door and the rest of us all bailed out of the comfort of the jeep ,,,and into the elements to put on our hats, waders, fleeces, and all weather jackets.

There was just room enough for the three of us to cast out but my first 2 casts resulted in me losing my rigs. I had a horrible flashback to the north beach in Greystones and all those tackle losses but the 2 lads pointed out my mistake in sending the lead high which resulted in it hitting the mud forcefully and sticking in solidly. I had more luck with the next cast,,at least i got it back  .We kept the rods low as they were blowing over in the gale force wind. An old guy arrived and made his way down to annoy,,,,,,,,,,,i mean talk to us. He couldnt keep his bellowing laughter in as he told us how much he admired our optimism for braving the elements in our search for fish. He was literally falling around the place laughing at us, in fact nearly choking himself in the process  ."Theres no fish out there, only crabs", he told us,,,,before telling us all about his own fishing days in Dungeness in Kent all those years ago. In the end he left , as i think he feared for his own health he was doing so much laughing at us. He was certainly a character   .Boycie and a mate arrived next, but soon bailed back to the comfort of their car and headed off to find somewhere out of the wind   .They were only gone a short while when Mitch started the ball rolling with a nice double of flounder, one an impressive 42cms, the biggest i've seen , and really meaty  .Wheres that old guy now, we wondered  ,,,,,,,,,probably in A+E after all the laughing

.The fish were on the feed now and the 2 lads were catching regularly , with Ringo getting a nice double of his own  , both fine fish. I was really struggling, but at least i got one of my lost rigs back as i retrieved another one  .Mitch and Ringo both offered advice and tips and i picked up a lot from the 2 of them . This flounder fishing is a different ball game and i'll be more up to speed next time, thanks to the guys. They were both getting a brief respite from the wind in the jeep when i reeled in a nice fat flounder for myself. The relief was palpable and the lads blew the horn in celebration for me  .I was over the moon getting a decent fish, though at 32cms he was only a tiddler compared to the boys' 40+cms whoppers. We fished on till it got dark with Mitch ending up with 8 or nine,,,Ringo with 3 whoppers and me with the one and only,,,,but i'll be on the hunt soon for beads and bling for next time. I really enjoyed the day and once again thanks to the lads for all their help,,,,,,,,,,,,,watching them go about their business really put me at the back of the class,,,,,but they were more than willing to help.We packed up and i was soon back to my own car and heading home,,,,,,,,,,,,,with Ringo and Mitch heading for somewhere called Coutown   for more fishing.
ps,,,,,,,,,,i even got a masterclass in fish filleting from Ringo,,,,,,,,,,,which was put to good use later and i had fish gougons done in batter donated by my local chipper as my wife is to cooking what Julian Clary is to bricklaying

Eyes get yourself some watchleads or flat leads they sit on the mud. as soon as your lead hits the water reel it back a bit it means your lead will skim the mud and rest on top instead of sinking straight down into it.
