tons of turbot 05-10-09

Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:40 pm

People:myself and jason

Duration:3pm-11pm

Tide:high 7.30

Weather:beautiful

Bait:lug,razor,mack

Rigs:flattie rigs,two hook flappers

Results:turbot,doggies,pollock and poor cod

Report:as jason had missed out on sunday, we decided to hit a new beach mark on monday, were set up by three on an incoming tide,it is a sweet looking mark with a river running into the sea, so we were set up near the river with the plan being one rod looking for flatties baited with lug,and two hook flappers out at distance on the chance of a bass baited with razor macky cocktails.nothing happened for a while, then my rod hopped and in came a turbot 8) another new species for me then! :D on the two hook flapper!quick pic and back it went! then about half an hour later both jasons and my rods kicked off and both of us landed a double of turbot :D :D quick pic and back they went, thanks to stevecrows inventive unhooking gadget(which he had given me a display off unhooking flounder when i fished with him last) :D this lasted until high tide when we decided to move as we wanted to try for flounder, unuasually no flounder caught on this mark,we hit this mark as darkness fell, and a bloody doggie bashing session ensued on lug!! :x a few small pollock fell to sandeel flappers and jason then got the smallest poor cod ive ever seen,he would not let me take a picture out of pure embarressment :D :D but another new species for him this year :D nice session and we will be back to that beach again.

Nice session lads the beach south of that was all flounder for us the other night no turbot weird. Reckon eric is on the money the smaller one does look more brill like. Thinking of trying a new mark in Galway on Sat / Sun if ye fancy it? the more the merrier as it'll give a better overall picture of how the mark fishes... targets flats and rays possible Bass

just back from today's trip, we got 15 different species (no John Dory unfortunately) and a few nice big squid between the Islands, I hooked into a monster of a fish, more than likely a Porbeagle, hiding underneath the hull and taking a fancy to a Pollock which I was reeling up and got foulhooked by one of the 7/0's on my rig. I played him for around 20 minutes, Kevin had to switch the engine into reverse to recover some of the 150-200 yds 50lb braid the fish has pulled off the reel (brakes on full drag) to prevent that I got completely spooled. It felt like having hooked a train, just a constant pull and I could clearly feel the powerful slow movements of the fish and head thumps but it was just completely impossible to gain control over it and after another 10 or 15 minutes the 70 lb mono leader was at it's end, the rough shark skin constantly rubbing against it didn't really help either and the line just snapped underneath the first hook, which still had a half decent doggie attached to it. On the positive side, at least we didn't have the bother with all the tagging and landing lark. It's just a pity we never even saw the fish but who cares, good to know that there are still fish around these Islands we only know from tall tales or movies.
