ballycastle beach sat 18th april 09

Sun Apr 19, 2009 11:46 am

People: me jordan and minty

Duration: minty was there from noon and still there when we left at 9.30pm. us 4pm - 9.30pm

Tide: dropping

Weather: excellent

Bait: lug and mack

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: ME: blank (again) JORDAN: 1 flounder

Report: we read that minty was headed up thet way looking some company, so we got a run up as there were rumors of turbot on the beach :P (yes jordan is still trying for one   ) we arrived to find minty on up towards pans rock setting up beside 2 other anglers. he moved on up from the river end of the beach as he had'nt got a bite all day. but the 2 anglers at the rock end of the beach had a few turbot and flounders so things were looking up :D :D :D jordan was baiting up a rig with mackie strips and almost got a new species before the rod was even in the water :D :D not the turbot he's been after, but a border collie     i turned around to see the dog with the bait and hook in it's mouth and thought "awhh god no" now i'm gonna have to listen to some yappy dog owner winge on at me to unhook their dog     but by some stroke of luck the dog managed to strip the bait from the hook with it's mouth without getting hooked up.there were loads of people on the beach with dogs running about even thow there are council sign posts all over the place clearly stating that dogs are not permitted on the beach    anyway back to the fishing    . not much to report really, jordan got one flounder that he did'nt even know was there until he reeled in to re bait and me and minty were discovering that this session with jordan was quickly turning into a spectator sport again        i was thinking to myself that i was'nt going home fishless again so we shot on up to waterfoot beach as it never fails and left minty to fish on as he was adament that the beach was'nt gonna defeat him     . then things went from bad to worse. we arrived at waterfoot to find the beach 2 foot deep with kelp and weed      i've never seen it so bad there before. i'll need to give it a week before going back up that way   . so plan B went to plan C and we went over to the harbour to see if we could dip a line there. but when we got over it was packed with anglers. most of which were juniors, which was good to see :P :P . so not wanting to crowd them we just admitted defeat and headed on home. i don't appreciate it when people try to squeeze me out of a spot (big mistake), so i was'nt gonna be a hypocrite and do the same. yet another blank to add to my ever growing list     . but it was a nice day and jordan enjoyed himself, so i was happy enough :P

jordan's flounder was taken at only 25ft in front of him man. i'm heading up to portrush tomorrow to try a few of last summer's marks out to see what they're fishing like at the moment. if you fancy a run out just let me know mate. like i always say, the more the merrier :D :D :D

did the same ourselves man and it was impossible    i'm just gutted as i was going to fish the beach this week. but i'll give it until after the weekend to let the tides do their work and wash all the kelp and weed away    unlucky with ballycastle. i honestly thought you might get something as the light went, but it looks like it's gonna be one of those beaches that fishes best from low to high. at least you can take that knowledge from the trip, so it was'nt a complete waste of time

MC wrote:well done Jordan, try sandeel for turbot, its what i get them on

thanks for the tip MC   do you cut them in half or use then whole???? all the turbot i've got so far were on worms, mackie strips or squid tenticles. the squid tenticles seem to work best. last year i watched ronald get about 5 turbot using the same tenticle in one session    . and before all you budding comedians go into a typing frenzy, i said "TENTICLES"

Unlucky lads. I suppose its the time of year. not long before the fish starting showing up in larger numbers.

Sorry I never got back to ya minty. I went up to Donegal on the saturday morning.

I have had a few of those scary moments with the dog running away with a baited mackeral for it only to drop it in time. I wouldnt fancy trying to get a hook out of a dog's mouth either.

You boys going to the comp this weekend?

usally cut the tail off and the head at the gills, the only other thing i have got them on is a long thin slice of mackeral belly

already in the works   we've got a pretty busy fishing schedule over the next few months. we're off to galway in may and jordan wants trigger fish and garfish, so that's a trip to cork and then a bass session in waterford or wexford. add to that theres all our club comps then our usual fishing marks up north to hit    we'll be 2 very busy boys
