Me 5 Flounder, Fuller 6 Flounder, 2 3 Bearded Rockling, 1 Whiting and 1 Doggie :




We both wanted to fish this beach for ages now and got the opportunity last night. We spent our childhood down there and that's where we first fished so many years ago. After really getting into the fishing this year we had vowed to return. Seeing as our mam has a mobile home fairly close by we had the accommodation covered.

The tide did not really suit us but with one of my daughters with me we took what we could get. I had picked up some juicy rags on Saturday and forgot a collection from my freezer. I picked up a few bits down there but it was really leftovers by the time I got to the shop.

Soon as I had my little one settled and minded we headed down and set up tow rods each. I know that there are loads of sand eels on this beach so I was ledgering them in close with rag on a 2 hook flapper every other cast. At distant I had mac or Squid or a mixture. My brother was casting just behind the breakers with rag and lobbing mack out at distant.

In was hoping for a bass because I know they are here but maybe my timing or technique was wrong. When we started the wind and current were very strong and we were both into big clumps of weed. Luckily this died down after about an hour or so. There was a steady flow of flounder all night though. Fuller managed to pick up a flounder of 33cm and a rockling at 27cm a double personal best for him. He also picked up his second dogfish of the week and it was much bigger then his last. We had no time to measure him because we struggled to get the hook out so it was a quick return for him.

By about 2ish we were running out of bait and started to pack up. On both our last casts we reeled in another flounder each. Something was knocking my rod at distance and stripping the bait but I had no luck. I even changed my hook size down but still no joy. Still delighted for my bro getting a good mix of species and two personal bests in one session.

It was great staying down there though and not having to load up the vans with smelly gear and drive up the N11. We had a cup of tea and a sambo each in front of us in about 20 minutes of leaving the beach. A big thank you to mammy Fuller for babysitting and the fry this morning. I'm looking forward to a few more sessions there this summer.:

nice wee session there ,btw the rockling both look like five bearded ,very hard to spot the 2 spare beards on the snout, but the colour looks right for 5 bearded.

Deffo a flounder bud. Checked skin and was all smooth and had the nodules running down the back.

Yeah we were not sure but we stuck him in a bucket for a while and before releasing him gave him a good look over. Both of us agreed on three but maybe we didn't spot more.

Nice session well done the rocklings are both definately 5 bearded the two beards on the snout as Ronald said tend to stick flat to the skin if you rub your finger over the snout they usually pop up

Though dab & 5 beard too at 1st glance.

Got a flounder in arklow yesterday myself that was quite strange, had nodules on the head, also eitherside of the lateral line at the top of the fish, then nodules along the lateral line, but the remainder of the back of the fish was smooth and its colour/pigment was faded.

if you are in doubt weather dab or not, turn the fish around and look at the underside, the dab has a nearly translucent belly which is a clear distinction, with small dab you can actually see through the skin

Definitely a 5 bearded rockling - there seems to be loads of them around this year.

Cheers lads but it was deffo a flounder. Pure white under belly and like I said nodules straight down the back.

I'm only sorry now I did not get a 5B rockling for my species list

Lads that IS a Dab, They dont even look anything like flounders you can rub them look for nodule's or whatever its a Dab.. Unless there is a flounder underneath the Dab

Right ok I'll back down on this one too then. I don't want a car park brawl over a flounab!

Oh and he/she was lip hooked and safely returned to the water. Just incase the sex or C&R argument kicks off next
