Report: After being out on Friday afternoon in Wicklow Harbour I had decided to cut the grass, shop etc etc on Saturday. Got a call from Big Mick to go to Greystones but declined the offer

2 hours later he rang to tell me he was getting plenty of flats and the temptation was too much for me

. On the way i got a single fillet of mack in Dunnes as thats all they had.
I arrived at the rocks at 4pm with the tide starting to go out.The fishing had slowed and Big Mick had to go at 5pm so he gave me his leftover rag. I had a two hook flapper on the beachcaster with rag and mack but couldnt connect with any of the bites i was getting. I set up the small spinning rod with a mini rig , 1 ounce weight with a size 1 hook trailing from it on the bottom. This was baited with a small piece of rag. I got a few bites from this set up but after reeling in a couple of crabs i didnt think there was anything at all out there

. The water had dropped considerably and i'm guessing was only about 7-10feet deep at the base of the rocks i was fishing from.
I was holding the spinning rod feeling for a bite when i noticed a rattle on the big rod. I put the small rod down and started to reel in,,,,, if there was anything on it was small

and i reeled in a small flounder. Just as i landed it i noticed the small rod going and i dropped the beachcaster,,,,,lifted the rod tip and struck. Out in the water a few yards in front of me a bass popped his head up and i nearly sh"t myself,,,,excuse my french

. It was the last thing i expected at that moment,,,, a bass on a size 1 hook on 12 lb line on a small spinning rod . The rod was nearly bent double as i tried to keep his head up,,, my heart pounding as i clambered down the rocks to get nearer the water. I knew the rod would never lift him up without breaking so i let the wave action bring him to me until i got hold of the line with my hands. The rocks were very slippery and i was trying to keep my footing as the bass was swept under a ledge with the 12lb line rubbing on the edge of the rocks

. Luckily the waves brought him back out again and i lifted him out of the water

. My legs were like jelly with the excitement as i put him down and measured him. Nearly 50 cm and quite fat

. All i could think of was the fact that i'd forgotten my camera

but luckily a passerby had seen me landing him and came over to have a look. He had a cameraphone and took the photos, then emailed them to me,,,,,thanks Tom

. I couldnt get over the fact that a small half a rag had caught a bass about 5 yards out from me. I suppose thats the beauty of it,,,,you just never know what'll turn up next

. Last cast landed me a whiting and i left about 7-30 happy out!!!!!!
