Report:well headed to a surf beach i had been told there was bass about, the surf was good, nice waves not too big, great i thought some fishing before the winter storms. So i set up above the high water mark, tackled up and went fishing.

things went great, managed to get a few knocks, in between deweeding my line, but no takers so far, but hopes where high as the surf had eased a bit the rain had stopped, so i was re-baiting when i was up to my middle in water, (one minute i am 70yards from the sea the next i am in it) all my gear washed away including the rod i was baiting up. Yup you guessed it my finger was impaled with a 1/0 hook which riped itself out, lost some blood but used a clean hankie and electrical tape to fix finger. Spent the last hour looking for my gear, found it all but the seat box was fill of sand and all my reels where swimimg in water, i did lose my bait and the box to the sea, which i don't mind as it could have been me, but thanking i am a big heavy fella first time i said that

be sure to give everything a good wash and cleaning out... that includes your box..

Geezas Martin, glad to here your alright man!

Its never happened to me, but I have seen it happen to others....like Steve said, the sea takes no prisoners....this should be a warning to others.....be alert at all times, especially if fishing from high rocks, you have got some chance to get clear from the water on a surf beach, but if your washed in from a high rock you will be beaten to a pulp.

This came up a bit back....always go fishing in two's, you have some chance of help....but on your own, thats it, you are on your own! more so at night in the dark.

i know Tom, i had set up well above the high water mark, and the sea was was 70 yards away, then i came on the forum and saw the weather warning for huge swells on Saturday, i must have got the first one, just goes to show you can never be too careful, just think what could have happened if i was standing at the waters edge

MC,uel be goin till u wont be goin........... :shock: when i go fishin in a big surf i usualy were a lifevest.. just in case.....it happens.........there could be a tree stump or something washing around what would have happened if something like that hit you when u are waist deep and the wave receading. :shock: .glad u got your gear back and the finger :)

hi cortaz, i was wearing my floatation jacket, which i always do when fishing, kinda glad i didn't need it, very happy its just the finger that hurts

Glad to here you're OK. This should be a warning particularly to those of us from the East Coast who venture to other more exposed coastlines ...

You were lucky MC, could have been an awful lot worse. It really is far too dangerous to be out fishing on the west coast at the moment. I just hope we don't hear of someone less fortunate, swept of the rocks of something in the news this evening.

MC, if thats the beach im thinking of, i'm not surprised by this. Seen some serious surges on it. If its any help, i caught most of my bass there when its been pretty calm!

glad to hear your ok,that was a close one.an know how you feel,had same type of thing hapen to me on the rocks at fanad head years ago, was left clinging to the rocks, all gear was washed away. it scared the life out of me

You should never head out sea fishing without having checked the forecast especially the winds and predicted wave heights.

What surf beach were you fishing if you don't mind me asking?
If you were on Benone/ Downhill, then the swell here can be very unpredictable, and dangerous especially when the forecast was for such a large swell.

Glad to hear you got your gear back, as i have heard of allot of gear going to the sea gods in weather like this.

same thing happened to me i nearly drowned as we were on a bank and the tide flooded in less than 5 mins it was up to my nose on the way back in. scary stuff

the forcast wasnt that bad when i checked the weather, but it was expected, the beach i was fishing was fine, no winds or nothing, i am just gald i play it safe at at times, just remember lads, i was above the highest water mark and well away from the sea but sometimes even thats not enough
