Report: It was raining heavily by the time I reached vico road to fish the white rock beach and continued to do so for the rest of the afternoon. It was roughly an hour before hightide with only a small swell running, making it fairly safe to wade just beyond the beach break and fish. It would appear that I am somewhat of a sandeel mecca as from the moment I entered that water I was literally waste deep in them. However, although there was plenty of tasty bait fish around nothing seemed to be feeding on them. I walked the beach twice, throwing out a few different sandeel imitations but nothing showed. After a wet and thoroughly enjoyable two hours I moved to the area of rough ground below sorrento to try for some pollack.

Pollack came immediately but where much smaller that the normal small size! See the picture of the monster below, the fly is at least half its body length (greedy fish). Only managed to land six fish but missed a good few takes. I tied this fly a few nights ago and it fished very well today including how it swam (see picture below). It is made from two materials that I hadn't used before; goose biots and para post, tied on a size four low water kanasan salmon fly. Finished fishing when my hands lost all sensation due to the cold :roll:

That fly looks good nice and simple. Will be going out tomorrow might try whitrock never fished there with the fly there before. Will be going around 10ish if your interested.

Depending on the weather, it sounds like a plan! Will see you down there at around 10ish. Just for reference if you have a stripping basket bring it as you will need it. The very steep nature of the beach causes a very high frequency and fast wave action making maintaining stripped line in a somewhat organised fashion a nightmare. The alternative is to stand on the beach reducing your overall casting distance.

Regarding the fly, the only part I would change is the hook colour to make it look more inconspicuous.

Sounds good guys. Dont have a stripping basket but will see what I have around the house to try and make one.

try your mums best colander or casserole pot with some duck tape, should do the trick

Stripping basket - Washing up basin, bit of bungee to go round your waist and a few cable ties sticking up through the bottom of it to stop the line tangling and away you go.

Love the fly deno, perfect simplicity.

Just like Marty suggested I use one of those homemade numbers! If you are looking for a good basin, "I've tried a multitude of places before I found the one I wanted" try the tesco's home-ware department (not the food court) in stillorgan shopping centre. Roches stores used to do them in blackrock but they have sold out to debenhams and you cant get them there anymore. Its very important to have the right basin :roll: :roll: :roll: . Think mine is made by Curver and cost 6.99 or 7.99. Also, If you are looking for a belt to go with it, woodies in Sallynoggin do a nice padded belt for twelve euro or you could go with a more agricultural belt with metal hook clip for 6 euro. Plus, while you are there you can pick up some zip-ties, it shouldn't cost you more than 20 euro in total and its all relatively in your area.

Thanks for the advice lads Found an old storage box, that seems to fit the bill, Didnt have any cable ties so had to improvise with some hose pipe cut up. It will do the job but will have to get some cable ties. Also id say its probably a bit too deep. Best I could do at short notice :D .

Sounds good. I will bring down some bungee cords just in case your hose pipe doesnt hold. Also, I wouldnt worry too much about the zip tides, the tray will still work witout them, it just works better with them.

for cold hands and fly fishing get a pair of neoprene gloves and cut the fingers off from the knuckle down, that way you can use your fingers and the hands stay warm

I'll be leaving in 10 mins. I'll show you what I did with the hose pipe. I have an old belt thing to tie it around me.

I blanked at both the beach and the rock area below Sorrento. Jack, caught a nice pollack over the rocks and I think Eric picked up a corkwing wrasse ( I think, I was about 200m away at the time and heading home) on limpet! Since I left early I'm not sure if they caught anything else.

ended up with a few corkwings and lost a monster :x

Nothing else for me, tried some limpets as well but didnt get anything
