Arthur,

Just to let you know the very first attempt ever to catch a bass in N. Antrim based on your 'new moon is the best time' theory was successful with 4 bass caught and a sea trout on 11th Dec and one bass caught on 13th Dec.

New moon was the 13th Dec, it suited us both to fish on the 11th and we fished over high water which was just after dusk at 17.30pm. To our amazement we caught 2 bass each. Im not saying it would be easily repeated considering the infrequency with which bass are encountered this far north, but all the same, the reason we went fishing on that day was because the new moon was very very close. I should also add that it was the first beach session either of us had done in 2012. Its not as if we had been out doing lots of that sort of fishing and eventually ran into a good session. The complete oppositte in fact.

We did get out on the day of the new moon but the session wasnt as good as 2 days previous but a small bass was caught and returned on 13th Dec by my cousin. A nice 2lb pollack had me going for a while but I didnt get a bass on the day of the new moon. That doesnt take away from the fact that in 2 sessions very close to the new moon, 5 bass were succesfully caught. Neither of us had caught a bass before in Co Antrim. So it was a very very big result.

Cheers Arthur, if anything happens around the time of the new moon in January I'll let you know.

Cathal.
