Bloody Casting Issue!!

Spent a few hours Monday chucking a lead off the ground style ( with the reel down low) to fine tune my poor timing, very productive. Anyway when laying the sinker out on the beach I turned the rod towards the lead ( rod eyes facing the lead) and a few times on release of cast I got serious line burn on the top of my right wrist, i drew blood on a few of them. I look like I was trying to slit my wrists. Is this poor hand placing or mis timed swing? I was steadily increasing distance from first to last cast and only had 1 or 2 dodgy ones, but I have 6 clears slashs on my wrist.

Any thoughts casters?

the line is hitting your wrist. as your casting style smoothens this will happen less and less. keep it up! you can use a wristband to stop yourself lookin like a wristslasher! failing that you can just impress the ladies with tall tales of how you beat up some guy tryin to rob an old lady with a knife... 8) :lol:

Hi KStaff, its a prob that used to be common in the tournament casting world years ago when the butts where a bit softer, basically your bending the butt alot and the line is running across your wrist on release. Its quite similar to a bow and arrow with the line ruinning from the reel at the bottom to the first guide, the bend when you cast lets the line run across your wrist in the middle.I have a few jackets round here still that dont have a right cuff anymore though so much of this. The cuts are caused by the leader knot flying across your wrist.

Congrats your bending it good, time for a stiffer rod and more distance.

the rod i began casting with gave me some really bad cuts on my wrist. i couldn't get the full potential from the rod as my casting wasn't great. now ten years later with a better casting style using the same rod i can get a lot more out of the rod. by now it's lot softer and my distance has increased using the high swing- i am getting more out of the rod/ bending the rod more than ever. it is extrememly rare for me to get cuts on my wrist now though? does this not go against what you are saying?

I'm no big caster but what I was always told was wrist cuts were down to poor timing. I had the same problem but getting the cut gives an added insentive to be a better caster. When I was starting casting not so long ago I aggrevated a shoulder injury so badly It was painful to be driven in a car let alone drive one so make sure your shown the right way to do it. Very little effort gives great distances and ignoring this gave me my injury. Keep practising the off the ground even when you switch to a swing as its the basis of the cast. Now I can otg cast consistently further than with a swing which is something I'm still working on.

Cheers for the replies men, I like the fact that I'm bending the butt ( don't even comment anyone!) it's a Century CM. I'll take all advice on board and see what happens, if nothing else Wexford could be like the opening scenes of saving Private Ryan with all the blood in the water. We might catch sharks!

While we are in the Tips & Tricks for Sea Anglers area kstaff, it might be worth your while asking somebody the best way to unhook a scorpion fish.
I'm sure the shake with fear and try not to touch it approach you used on Sunday is not the best way to go. :P :P :P

ROFLMAO..... :D Myself and Pete McGrory had a similar incident with a weever fish last weekend. Finally sorted with a lovely pair of LIDLs needle nosed pliers and a quick shake.

Just to be clear, I was on the busiest beach in Waterford on Sunday afternoon, hundreds of walkers and I'm the only person fishing,so when I caught something a crowd gathered, I tried to play it cool till i saw the ugly thing on the end! I had to wade back out into the water so they couldn't see me try flick it from the hook without touching it or getting stung or shocked or whatever it was capeable of doing!

Dignity and Macho pride gone with the released Mini dinosaur!

when casting over grass the wrist cuts are power for the course,
there is really no way of avoiding them, just stick a sweat band or
something similar on youre wrist, all the best.
