Sore Fingers

I regularly suffer from the effects Ragworm or Maddie juice after a session. No matter how much I have cleaned my hands, I find under my nails to become quite sore and even swollen after a long session. It is defo related to the juice from Rag and or Maddies. I never get this problem using any other bait.

Anyone suffer the same effects and if so what do you use to remedy it?

it must be from the organic acids in the worms - unless you got some crazy skin condition - anyway - put your finger tips into something lightly - basic - im no expert though - milk?!?!

Having slightly sensitilve hands myself :oops: I noticed yesterday that Aldi are selling a medical based hand washing solution, that is antibacterial. They are also selling surgical style latex gloves that are not power coated. The gloves might be good when you know you are going to have to use a lot of Rag / Maddies.

BTW, I bought both yesterday :roll:

ask rampant wreckfish, i know that he had real problems with this same thing while we have been away twice fishing the home nations, he found that it was actually worse than normal when usng the farmed rag.

I was finding the same thing happening myself, wasn't sure what it was though? had a suspision it was the Rag though, thanks for clearing it up :)

I get something similar, but I dont use rag very often down here. I was putting mine down to a combination of hook pricks, numerous hand washes in cold sandy water and chapping to be honest.

best product i found for this is is from superdrug it is an anti bac hand wash no need for water. Just wash hands with product after you bait up with rag.

for after care when at home use some form barrier cream like e45 even this will help calm the inflammation and irritation down. If that does not work seek medical advice from your Doctor he will give you advice.

Or another option is to bait up using a rubber glove.

As some have already said an anti bac hand gel works great for me, got it from asda and just rub some on every so often. I tried the glove thing but found for me they where just a nuisence, they are on then off and get damp which makes them hard to get on.

Some guys have a problem with sand and grit getting under their nails....that can cause the nail to lift and can become sore if worm or crab juices get in...I have heard of guys putting superglue under their nails to prevent this.

The only problem I get with my hands is from line cuts....as for fixes like creams and such I am always a little suspect that the smell may spook fish.

I would say thats what my problem is TBH Tom and I would say the salt water doesnt really help either. Worse is after a session peeling crabs.....ouch!

on a serious note there is a product out at the moment that is called spray gloves, which as stated you spray on your hand and it act like latex gloves without feeling like a pair. cant find the name but heard they where good for people with dry irratable skin.

Be a bit handy if the Avon lady becomes our new tackle dealer :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have a split on my thumb which opens up occassionally and stings like hell when worm juices etc get in. My dad showed me a 'snowfire stick' which I believe is parafin based and takes the sting away very quickly and helps it heal up.

Been to Boots but they didn't have it in but pharmacist can order it. Might be worth a try.

Anybody tried barrier cream the lads in the stores in work use it during bad weather it's water and oil repellent.Use it myself when working on machines stops the oil from being ground into the skin so should also be useful for stopping juices and smells sticking to the skin(always forget to bring some with me when I'm out fishing :oops: )

I have the same problem and its def from the rag.I usually only get it if i`ve been fishing with rag on a long session and especialy if i`ve cut my nails a day or two before hand(then its really sore :cry: ).Not sure about using barrier creams etc,i`d be worried about contaminating the bait.

rag worm can give you sore fingers specially when u pierce ur fingers with hooks or if u chew ur nails ta bits when i get tired during an all nighter its not nice when u rub your eyes they sting like mad and u get blood shot eyes ur best just keeping ur hands in your pockets :lol:

i get sore fingers in the wick area of fingers. where the nail meets skin at the side. I get it all year around rag lug anything. It sore after the session thank god because it does be sore. When I get home and clean probaily they get a bit better. The bucket of water beside you sounds like a good idea.
