Cheap and effective bait clips

Take some electrical cable (you can buy some in woodies and the like).
this cabled is the kind used in wiring houses, generally comes in a grey sleeve with 2 cores surrounded by blue and brown sleeves with an uncovered core in the middle. Some sparks out there will no doubt know the name of it straight away.

Anyway once you have taken the grey sleeve off and have the smaller cables, cut a lenght say 1 foot. Pull the copper out. Now you effectivley have a clip and a sleeve.

cut small sections of the copper, say 2inches approx. Cut small lengths of the sleeve, say 1-1.25 inches. take the copper bend the last 10 mm with the nose of a pliers. This will give the clip part. thread through your rig line and then insert the copper piece. Once satisfied with the fit and position of the clip give the other end of the clip a small turn to prevent the clip coming out of the sleeve.

In about 20 minutes i made 100 of these things.

Great idea Jon

I want to make some 1-up 1-down rigs - I could use this wee jobby quite easily.

Thanks,

JUDE

another great one i find is to use small rotter clips, they are just basically a small half loop with an eye, thread the rig body through the eye, then twist the rig body around the half loop on the clip once, this locks it in place, and the beauty of it is that if u have to replace a hook, you can move the bait clip to to suit the new length of snood.

Phil - I take it you mean rotten bottom clips (Mustad type)?

If you are asking for the cable in a shop, it's either 1.5mm or 2.5 mm square "twin and earth". Any spark should be able to give you loads of offcuts if you ask nicely.

Excellent I'll be able to get some off my mates who are sparks without sounding stupid "Have ya got any off that wire...you know the one with the eh..wire in it :? ? :)

Yeah john.
I have been using twin and earth for years now.Costs nothing.
1.5mm is perfect.Once you strip the sleeving off, discard the two heavier cables and just use the thinner earth cable.Beauty is,they can easily be repositioned up or down easily.I think i got this tip from Sea Angler magazine about twenty years ago.

didn't know it was in SA. wouldn't have had enough pocket money to buy SA 20 years ago :D I could'nt imagine them having it the mag now, what with all the ads and fluff thats in it. A decent money saving tip is probably not in their interest.

cheers

Close to the same subject of rig building on the cheap. I use telephone cable, twisted around the line behind a bead as a bait stop
If you use soft tube for rig building then find a gas boiler service engineer.
Out there at the moment is a Potterton Suprima boiler where the circut boards are crap. When changing them the wiring harness has to be changed also the result is about 15' in assorted colours of cable just slide out the wire and you have enough tube to keep you going for a year or two.

heres a tip, those scooby string things all the bairns were making things out of a few months back, its hollow tubing. Slip your line through, then through again the same way, and pull hard, the tubing twists. Instant bait stop.
