i am a little confused about how to keep the reel in top class condition, obviously after every session it will get a quick run under the water top to clear and sand and help prevent corrision from salt water....What i dont get is anglers who oil their reels regulary....How often should this be done and how is it done????? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I don't maintain my multipliers in a highly tuned state but I try to keep them reasonably clean and free-running. They usually gets a strip down a few times a year to check for internal corrosion, clean out dirt, check bearings, etc.
Apart from that, a run under the tap when I remember and a wipe down with WD40, which cleans the reels and, in theory, chould act as a water repellant.

the penn will survive almost zero maintainence. a rinse under the tap is enough after a session. open it maybe once a year to re-oil and check all is well! if the reel gets a soaking strip it down asap. can't say about the abu but i reckon they may need a little more care?

Yep, I've always thought Penns and Daiwas need less t.l.c. than Abus, but I haven't used an Abu in a while ...

the abu will need more t.l.c. than the Penn but even that need not be too severe.
Penn
As Mark said, just rinse it under a gentle flow of cold water. If it sounds like sand has got in around the edges of the spool, then it will need to be cleaned out by removing the spool.
Abu
Same as the Penn but keep and ear out for the bearings screaming during the cast or the gears feeling notchy during the retreive, if this happens then the reel will need a strip down, clean and service. make sure that the mag adjustment slider is kept free from sand as it can be easily jammed.
For both reels, if you dont know how to get them apart or service them, it is best to get someone that knows to show you.

i should be able to help you out, i do all my own work on my reels for tournament casting, everything from converting them to CT, maintenence, repairs..etc

Christ.Maintenance?????.I have a Daiwa 7ht and the poor bugger hasn't even had a sniff of oil in about 5 years and it still runs sweet. My 6500ct rocket is nearly as badly off.It was used in tournament work years ago,so got a little bit more TLC.
