Is it possible to take a tip section, cut the top end(last 20 cm) off and replace it with another tip whilst maintaining the rods integrity?
Is this something that a profesional rod repairer/builder can do?
Has anyone ever heard of someone replacing part of the tip section with a fibreglass piece for any reason?
THe reason I ask is that I have come across a rod that I am interested in. The Owner seems to have a lot of experience in repair/alterations etc.
He has performed the above operation in order to enhance bite detection on the rod.
I don't want to buy the rod and have the tip snap off when I give it some welly.
cheers

I wouldnt trust that join no matter who done it, I dont know of a blank maker who would even try it, not at the tip of all places.
What make of rod is it anyway ?

heard some fitting tips onto rods in such a way- again to enhance bite detection. if only to b used for short lobbing it would be fine. i am presuming the above fit was to make the tip softer? if so it would not be ideal for long range fishing(most of the time) as the stretch in the line and the soft tip will make it less responsive to a biting fish and dulls the bite detection. a stiffer, fast tapered tip is preferable when givin it some welly!!

Its a Grauvell Tektron. Having trawlled the net I can't find too much info on how this is done but it is not uncommon for manufacturers to produce a tip containing both glass and carbon in seperate parts but connected.
I'm just not sure if this modification will hold up, although the rod is a bit of a bargain....

Jon, you can actually purchase replacement tip sections for the Tektron, about the 80 euro mark I think. It beats me why anyone would have done this though as there is a match tip available for this particular rod. If you dont mind me asking, what constitutes a bargain?

Thanks guys,
I know it doesn't make sense to make your own match tip when one could be bought. But if I needed to buy a new tip that would ruin the bargain:
2 tektron rods for 200 Euro.
Pete I sent you a PM, if you have a sec could you reply I'm in the middle of deciding what to go for and sending PMs to guys all over the place.
cheers

In the manufacture of a rod, it is done to put say about 15" to 20" of glass in a tip that is made of carbon fibres, this is done before its wrapped onto the mandrel though, not after the tip has been finished off.
This method will give better bite detection, the tip when under pressure will have a dogleg bend, it will still be strong enough for casting.
