reel posistion

Lads someone please settle this for me cant figure out which is the best posistion to but my multi on a rod....hi or low on the but and why??

Depends on the caster. If you have the reel low on the butt, there is a tendency for you to be able to slow the cast down which gives you more time. I switched to casting down the butt a while back and I do prefer it. One disadvantage is that your reel is closer to the sand or rocks that you are fishing on, so you do have to take care when threading the line or dealing with a fish. If the reel is up the butt and the rod spins round under the weight of the reel, the reel is usually clear, but down the butt it is likely to hit the floor.

One other point is that some people find it easier to reel in with the reel high - especially if you have a fish on. I use a retractable reducer and love it! With the reducer, you can set the reel way down giving you a longer effective rod length. Mine is just one hand width up from the butt stop.

If you have coasters or a sliding reel seat, slide the reel down the butt, set the mags on to max and cast with just a lead so you are not worried about hooks etc. If you set the mags to max, you are not looking for distance, just making life easier while you get the hang of using your other thumb to stop the reel. See how it feels and if you are comfortable with it. Have a few casts before your final choice.

I have the reel down low after going to a casting instructor who told me to as it made a hard rod feel softer but only do it if I felt ok with it. I don't understand the techno babble behind it but for me its a more comfortable way to hold a rod with a mulfiplier especially if something like a slosh which is high off the rod . The right palm is free to push and left hand is well positioned to pull. I found it a nightmare with a FS so I cast high up. Bringing in a fish is harder but the guy I went to dismissed this as he'd brought in 4 cod over 20lbs with reel down to the but. I have the reel 10 to 12 inchs above the butt cap to make reeling in fish easier and it also saves on damage to the reel.

Right... I'll try to get this right, the techno babble behind it is....

The Further the reel is away from the First eye, Obviously the more line there is between the 2 points, and what does line do? it stretches... So the more line you've got out during your swing the more the 'Cushioning' effect from the stretch of the line... I think.

You also have to take into consideration, No matter how well spaced the rings on a Rod Are your never going to be able to get the line to run the same way as the blank, so while the Blank when loaded properly is a gracefully curved ark, the line is also being stretched, in straight lines from Reel to 1st ring, 1st Ring to 2nd Ring, 2nd to 3rd, etc etc Also giving millimeters of extra stretch, having the reel further away from first ring obviously emphasises this little Cliche and gives those extra few milliseconds to fully load the road, Making the Rod feel 'Softer', effectively turning a Tiger into a Little Bitty Pussycat.

with the reel down low it makes your left hand become the pinion point and your right arm the leverage.. which will then give a bit more compression to the rod.. blah blah blah... longer cast (in theory)


i prefer reel higher up for the simple reason that my right shoulder will not forgive me if i change over.. but since injuring it i found when i cast i keep my right elbow closer to my side.. which means less movement on the pinion point wich creates more compression... i think i'll ave to draw a diagram at some stage..

this is a little topic....but how often do i need to oil a reel.....should rocket fuel be addded to my reels even ive i aint throwing huge distances :?:

even though they both look the same, they're not..(honest, i'm just not good at drawing on computers)

think of your right arm as the power arm.. with the reel set low your left hand is controlling it giving your right hand more freedom to give more power.. (yet another theory

If you wash you reels out, due to salt water getting inside, you should clean the bearings by soaking them in lighter fuel and then re-oiling. The bearings need to have oil to make them run smooth with very little friction. You can use 3 in 1, rocket fuel, sewing machine oil, engine oil etc. as long as you don't use WD40, you'll be OK. The viscosity of the oil effects the spool speed, so if you'r reel has magnets or blocks, you will want to adjust them to find the right balance.

The low position for the reel may also aid the balance with a heavy rod.
