a one hook or pennell pulley or paternoster, the most important thing is a rotten bottom set up at the bottom, and take plenty of extra leads with you.
2 or 3 snooded traces can also be used so long as the snood is lighter than your mainline, that way if it snags up , the snood will break and you should get your fish in ok. i tend to use 15-20lb snoods with a 30 straight through mainline for this....basically when im looking the smaller species

spark plugs make good rotten bottoms, i've even used stones (not as aerodynamic, but still works just as well)

hey martin, depending on the depth into which you are fishing, you could always use a float with a stop knot, you can ultimately fish any depth you choose.regards ivan

what i use for fishing weed beds and rocks is a one hook pulley homemade with the hook length between 6" to 1 ft long so that your hook has less chance of snagging. and lead lifts can save you alot of weights and can still be fished with a rotten bottom on

agree with all the above.
sometimes it can pay to fish a hooklenght of at least 2 feet and up to 4 when fishing for cod. short snoods can lead to many missed fish. use a 6' long rig body. your snood starts at the top of the rig. on a tight line to rod tip your hooks should be just above the weed, when fishin at short range.
floating beads can work very well over rough ground.
hooks with a bit of spring in them have there benefits too as they can be pulled out of rock, but don't use em for big wrasse!

Hi Martin,
another useful thing I find is when using a Paternoster rig in the Rough trap the swivel and beads using telephone wire, It can often slide enough to free the snag and also allows you to change snood depth etc, I find it can work pretty well.
