Shockleader knots

Sun Mar 26, 2006 6:16 pm

Hi all

My last few outings have resulted in weed wrapping itself around the shockleader knot...pretty annoying when it gets to the top eye... Just wondered if anyone knows how this misfortune can be avoided????

Practice your knots, get it more streamlined, a big knot is sure to pick up weed.

if the weed is floating around in the water you are going to pick up pretty much the same amount anyhow no matter how small the knot is as it slides down the line and bulks up on itself

Try tapping the butt on the ground lightly before the knot gets near the top eye to shake of the weed.

even had weed come write down to the reel with the shockleader knot..gets pretty anoying when it happens cast after cast...think my knots are a little on the big side have to try smaller them :?

you could try placing your rod higher on the tripod. this keeps the tip higher, thus leaving you with less line in the water and so less line to catch weed. works for me.

Tryed it still couldnt manage to stay clear of the weed

use 60lb line straight through... for all the distance you cast , you wont notice any difference :D :D

Jus kew you have something smart to say...just knew it

i know some people discorage the use of these but i have tried vivaris 13m tapered leaders in heavy weed and have found them to help significantly with the amount of weed that catches in my tip eye. still wont prevent weed catching your line

Mon Mar 27, 2006 4:51 pm

Was using tapered learder on one rod and normal shock on the other the one with the normal shock was the problem

Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:00 pm

the same has happened me. in those kinda conditions i think its just a case of grin and bear it because your gonna get weed no matter what. if it dosnt catch the leader knot its gonna slide down the line to your termal tackle and catch there.

Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:08 pm

think we can agree that tapered shockleader in these conditions works best

Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:13 pm

think so alrite. just have to be careful when casting thats all. i tried to use the longest taper i could with the 13m vivaris. think some company has a 15 or 17m one. not certain though

Diwia tournament-orange stuff

problem comes with the tapered leaders that you have a weaker point at the knot than normal, and if the weed is thick and gathers around your trace, it will put a lot of pressure on the leader knot and with the tapered leaders it may break easier...
another way around it is to try knot glueand leave it to dry in a kind of blob around the knot, tapering back into the line nicely at either side this may help take away any of the wee bits sticking out of the knot to catch weed.

Hey might sound a bit stupid but i have never heard of knot glue.Is it easy to get hold of?
Cheers

na me either

used the glue knot on tapered leaders when dryfly/nymphing in the river. on thing is whether the glue reacts with the mono. unsure myself. from my experience ive yet to have a leader knot go. i use a bimini twist which i think gives a fairly high percentage knot strength

Cox and Rawle do a rig glue which isn't supposed to react with mono, you could try that.

Like lumpy just use a bimini twist and leave it at that.

The problem with tapered leaders I find is that if the weed is very bad it's going to gather on the knot and jam in the tip eye regardless of what knot you use. If you're playing a decent fish that means with a tapered leader the fish may still be 40 - 45 feet away and you're only way of landing it is to walk up the beach if that's an option. Whereas with a conventional leader and knot the distance to the fish is much shorter approx half that.
