Traces

Hi,

I'm new here and make my own rigs etc, one question I would like to know is about the snoods! say on a 3 hook flapper how long/short do people keep the snoods?

the bigger the surf the shorter the snoods - usually start off as long as you can cast your baits - say 40 cm
if it comes back tangling etc. go down to 30 cm
if its dead calm go up to 50cm and so on

different rigs and lengths can be better on different sloped beaches, gullies, sand bars etc.

how long is a piece of string :)

Planet Sea Fishing has a Book of rigs. Google will find you a PDF version. https://www.planetseafishing.com/book-of-rigs/

you might also usefully experiment with the material you use and breaking strain in the snoods.

Some species like wrasse don't care and will ignore 40 lb snoods attached to the bait, probably owing to the often churning conditions.
Others like mullet can be extremely finicky and nose up and then ignore a bait if they detect a snood.

so its not just the conditions, its the target species or the species you are likely to encounter on that mark, at that time of year...
