reel cleaning

Postby greg » Mon Jul 04, 2016 8:44 pm

just a few words to people who are new to cleaning reels after sea fishing.when cleaning a fixed spool reel always close the drag tight.dont use a hose it only forces salt into the reel.run a gentle tap wash the spool and rollerbearing.wipe down the outside with wd40.when the reel is dry open the drag to take pressure off the drag washers.if you put your reels in a case or bag remember to dry out the bag.and also don't fully close the zip on the reel case let it breathe.if you are using a lever drag multi close the drag completely before washing.let it dry and wipe down with wd40.then take of the drag completely and put the rachet on.this stops the drag washers from becoming compressed and useless.the same thing applies to star drag reels as well.never use wd40 inside the reel unless you want to clean it and regrease it its not an oil its a water displacer so will destroy bearing etc.when cleaning rods run under the tap and let dry. or use a baby wipe to clean the rod.hope this helps someone.
common sense not very common
