fishing line strength

what fishing gut strength is best for beach casting and pier fishing. and what strengh leaders do i need. just starting, any information will be great.

12lb to 15lb mainline will be fine.
The rule of thumb for shockleader is 10lb for every ounce so a 5oz lead will require a 50lb shockleader
