Choosing the correct weight!!

Has anybody any tips on how to choose the right weight when fishing from a beach please?

A lot will depend on the casting rate of your rod.

Next after that is the conditions you are fishing in the, distance you are casting and the tidal flow for the area.

A general location might get a better response.

I fish off the beaches on Bannow Island and Black Hall. I've only recently started fishing again. but when confronted when the sea I'm not sure if the spikey lead weight I'm using is enough or is it just a very strong current along the front. so if i use heavier weights i have to haul in a load of sea weed!!

sorry to be vague bout it, I'll inspect my gear more and do the research and make more informed question

but any tips on how to keep my bait in one place would be appreciated.

Great location there Kev.

I fished the Grange side the last set of spring tides and got away with a 5 ounce breakaway 90 minutes either side of low water. The weed almost made it unfishable outside of that.

It's a difficult enough area to fish, but the rewards can be great. But 5 or 6 oz should be plenty at slack water.

**Quick question for you, the day I fished I'd caught a few small bass and then got an almight bang, hit it and had a good fish on - a bull huss! Sick I was.

Have you ever had huss out of the channel before?

Was fishing specifically for Bass in a narrow estuary in bright sunshine - I thought I'd hit the motherload

What bait did the Huss take. Thought they were mainly mac feeders

Personally i only fish there 2-3 hrs either side of low water depending on the spring or neap tides. After that the run and weed become a nightmare.

on the channell's ive been using weights with grippers on them.

digging local rag and lug. i havnt had anything bite this summer.

so im pretty low on moral to be honest. a wrasse in kilmore quay was about as exciting as it gets.

when im in bannow fishing the estury i notice a s*** load of fish jumping etc..., is this mullet?

at one point i was walking along a small channell when the tide was out and the fish had been trapped in a shallow part and it was like the water was boiling. dont know what type they were tho as my eyes dont see tru water very well...

i seem to have more confidence with the gear im usin now.


anyone up for a bitta bannow fishing let me know. there was a local lad who turned out to be a motor mouth psycho.

your rag and lug will be stripped in about a minute flat by the crabs peeler crab is the best bait with plenty of bait elastic,you should get 5 to 10 min out of it before the crabs decimate it!as the lads say two hours either side of low and 5 or 6 oz gripper,if the weed is bad move!
mac feeding means fish baits i think however every huss i have caught was on peeler so to answer that question huss like crab bannow and lacken hold sea trout and mullet both will take food from the surface with trout the more likely suspect to get totally airborn
as for your motor mouth alot of spots have them ! most you will never see with a rod but by god they will always tell you what your doing wrong
