Cracked my spinning reel - advice?

Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:20 am

Hi all,

I dropped my spinning rod a few weeks ago and cracked my 20 year old daiwa - never failed on me once. Have a look at the pic, I'm wondering if there is any way it can be salvaged? Tis graphite.

In the meantime I've bought a sweepfire 4000 to get me by but I'm looking for another light reel of similar qualities that will see me for another 20 years.

Hmm, a tricky one because you cannot weld it, maybe an idea is to look into the procedure used by surgeons to repair a broken bone, where you drill a vertical hole into both ends, in this case into the neck of the reel foot and fit a metal pin (using dual component hard wearing epoxy or araldite to secure it in the cavity) down each side of the broken parts. After setting, you could drill horizontal holes through the foot with the implanted pin and use either screws or rivets which could then be passed through the holes and used to join the broken reel foot back together.

I did manage to repair a similar break for a mate by sleeving it with a piece of aluminium tube and lots of epoxy resin, held well.

same thing happened to my reel .
i cut a groves in each side (i used a cog out of a old clock powered by a cordless drill) sand area to be set
and put a strip of steel in each grove (pins from rivets cut into right length) covered with epoxy resin and mesh (surf board repair kit ) it is still going . the repair kit is only €7 and comes with mesh sandpaper

I might try that, I have some polyester resin and glass left over from boat work... cheers guys, makes me wish I didn't waste 20quid on the daiwa sweepfire 4000, grand for a light backup I suppose.
