As regards shock leader length, about 8 turns on the reel then the length of your rod and drop length. Use at least 10lbs of leader for every ounce of lead, i.e. 5 oz lead 50lb leader. The knot i use is a figure of 8 in the leader, then feed the main line through the figure of 8 then loop the main line and twist 6 or 7 times then feed the main line through the loop, moisten with saliva, tigten up the figure of 8 in the leader and pull both until they form a nice neat little knot.

Hi, is that 8 full rotations of the spool reel or 8 rotations of the reel handle plus rod length and drop length,thanks....

8 times round the reel. if your fishing from a height have it longer so its 8 round the reel but still long enough to be in the water. this way you can lift the fish in by hand.

A minimum of 8 turns fully around the spool plus the full lenght of the rod plus what ever drop lenght you use, this just keeps it all safe if case of spool slip during the cast and keeping the weaker main line away from the pressure area.
