Automatic Mullet Feeder

Wed Jul 29, 2009 4:56 pm

I found a little river just down the road from me that has a pretty decent population of mullet up to about 2lbs. Was thinking of setting up an automatic mullet feeder to groundbait for them. Was thinkin of something along the lines of a plastic bottle with a small 1cm hole cut in the bottom and a larger 1 inch hole cut in the side. I'm going to put a lump of raw chicken into it and hang it from a tree overhanging the river. I figure that in a few days flies should have laid eggs on the chicken. When they turn to maggots and start moving around they should start falling through the small hole slowly but surely over the next few days. Gonna float fish maggots down there next week to see if it's worked. Anyone tried this? I reckon it should work.....maybe....

seen it done when i was younger except there was no plastic bottle involved a man i not going to name used to hang a dead rabbit off a branch of a tree that was above the river and after few days he would catch all sorts of fish under the rabbit  he was after salmon. it used to freak me out had totaly forgot about it till now cheers :!: so it deffo works no need for any contraptions :D

Cow's heart sounds like a good idea actually. going to try get it set up tonight or tomorrow. Any idea how long it takes maggots to grow? I was guessing at maybe 3 or 4 days for the first few?

Ronan, only a mind as twisted and deranged as your could come with something like that, I like it. :) I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work although it would absolutely stink but probably not much worse that some of the biology experiments you've found in your tackle bag over the years

You missed a good one yesterday. Found a few big black lug from last week in my cooler bag. Needless to say they were no longer cool! In the bin in the shed now - I'm afraid to go back in there.

I remember using a similar contraption years ago back in Austria to breed maggots at an angling pals house until a storm brought it down from the tree and the guys dog dragged the rotting cows lungs into the house    where the little pet :P :P :P decided the best place to devour his prey safely was in the bedroom underneath the blanket    . Needless to say the lady of the house had a slightly dismissive attitude whenever she spotted my car in the driveway     .

Surprisingly enough no, I didn't, but it was pure bribery, I always brought a box of fags for her when visiting  :P  (she was a real devil for them duty free ciggies) but my mate did  , she left him about half a year later for another guy who wasn't into fishing at all :P    and had no fishing friends either  .

Some of them just hate the fishing, the smell and the "oh that WAS a rod in your pocket! Do you have to bring that f@*kn thing every where!"
