Fishing off bertragh beech westport on saturday evening on an incoming tide.Had four gram gripper lead,Got casts of about 30-35 yards against an incoming winds,After 5 minutes the rig would end up back at my feet infront of me or 50 yards down the beech, Anyhting I can do about this. I reockon my rod could handle 5 or even 6 but on heavier weights I allways hear this fearful whip snap noise out of my line! I gave up on the coast side and fished the bay side which was nice and calm and got 3 dog and a thorny.

Presume you mean 4 ounce leads

,, think you did the right thing anyway and moved to the other beach and got a result. Whats wrong with nice and calm, 3 dogs and a thornie

get yourself some gemini sinkers you can adjust the tension in the grip by tightening the wire in the head piece.or buy some gemini grapnel leads they will hold bottom no problem.

You could try casting uptide if the tide is running hard, let out some slack and let the grippers dig in. But this will be no use if you are using a too light a lead.
4oz into a wind wont be much good (i have found) you'll need 150gm and 175gm atleast. These tow the bait into the wind giving better grip.
You could also try putting an elastic band around the wires so that they dont break out...this might slow down your weight as its pulled around in the tide giving you a few extra minutes before it lands back at your feet!!
