Not to confuse you but my best bass, over 12lb was taken on a size 2 hook 8lb florocarbon line, while fishing under Youghal Bridge for small cod with crab legs as bait and pulled it through weed.
I've had a 9lb bass on the exact same set up while fishing for silver eel.

have had big bass on size 2 kamazans to 11lb unless i was using crab no need to go over a 2/0 for crab a 3/0 to 6/0 depending on the size of crab or if part of a pennel rig if i was fishing a rock mark and had to welly fish up to a ledge uptide extras would be best

keith, for me its mustad aberdeens, longshank 1 or 2/0 when baiting with worm, for razor, crab or cocktails 4/0s. have only lost a handful of fish on em, something like 1 in 25/30... for lures i like to use owner stingers trebles, they shoud come with a health warning as they are leathal. they are a bit brittel though with very little give in em, have been using clear sakuma 60lb. line for all my trace bodys, with 15lb. snools i dont use crimps just an overhand knot to trap the beads, it has not failed once...18lb.Diawa Sensor mainline , winter, 12/15lb. in summer.
the black aberdeen940s are second choice.

i would generally use pennels the hooks would be as follows

like some of the lads said 2/0 is grand but for the type of 2/0 it would have to be a mustad 2/0 ultra point ultimate bass for bottom hook.
the top hook use a owner 2/0 cutting point its a perfect combo imho.

mustad ref no.=33751bl
owner model no.=5111-121

hope this helps

Alright Jemo!
I like the Varivas Big Mouth (from Veals) in a 2/0 rigged Pennel style. The point is lethal sharp but they tend to dull slightly after being dragged over rough ground for a while.

I've had conger up to 15lb on the 4/0's rigged pennel style.

There is some give in the hook too if you are fishing rough ground which helps pull out of snags.

They are wide gape which means you can get a whole lot of crab and other bait on there and the point stays clear.

Veals do a stronger version of the hook also, the Varivas extra with thicker wire.

I've also used the Mustad Viking Hook in 2/0 or 3/0.

Otherwise i guess any decent aberdeen hook in the 2/0-3/0 bracket, some say bigger . .although i've never had to go bigger than that. . .i dont get many 10lb'ers . . hmm . .maybe thats why!!

:-)

i use the exact same.. sharp and strong and good all rounder too, luv em, great hooks and i'm not worried about leaving one in a fish if i have to, they corrode very quickly :D

i caught an 8.5lbs bass on a size 1 kamasan b940, and plenty of 10lbs+ huss on 1/0-2/0 kamasan b700's

have had bass to 12.5lb take a size 4 kamasan crab hook. and got 2lbers up 40ft cliffs on the same hook

i dont really think it matters what hook you use once you are prepared to be a bit more carefull getting them in. bass have a very soft mouth anyway, so bullying them in with big hooks isnt always and option.

its all down to the quality of the angler involved. if your catching pin whiting while im getting double figure bass.......

not all venues are plagued by the tiny stuff. i have a few venues where the smallest fish i have caught is over 2lbs. never seen a small fish any where near these marks

Fri Jan 04, 2008 2:19 pm

Mustad Nodic Bends 3/0, very small eye won't burst worm baits, also great for sandeel and a wide enough gape for a big lump of crab!

Had Bass to 13.5lb on em.

Mustad 90721BR Power Point Worm hooks 3/0

Cant praise these enough!
Hook up is 2nd to none in my experience.
Bass up to 9 1/2lb on them.

Ive yet to see one of these hooks pulled out of shape, even with Huss or Hounds swinging out of them :o
