was recently told that in dublin at this time of year rooting in weed is more productive for peelers than in tyre traps, is this true if so why

possibly, was out today and found all mine under stones which were well submerged under the mud, makes you think as to just how efficient diggers crabs can be.

When searching under the stones NEVER turn the stone over completly as the weed will now be under the stone and will rot and will be of no more use. Before you put the stone back down put another stone, about 2" high, under one corner of it this will give the crab some place easier to hide under.

have been doing that for a while, and never just drop the stone, gently place it, crabs arnt that tough and god knows they are getting scarcer.

a shaded area with weed (under a bridge for example) will produce more than just weed in the sun.

been collecting crab for years and never realised that they could be affected by heat like that, in fact i thought that they prefered heat :oops: :oops:

Finally got round to putting my own tyres down there about a month ago cause I'm sick of hauling stones and now I read this post !!! :-)

different areas produce at different times. its more important to check that the tyres are staying in place for the first 2-3 weeks than whether there is any crab in them. after 2-3 weeks if there is no crab in them you should worry.

tyres are oil based products and when first put into the sea have a smell that crab find of putting. it usually takes a while for them to weather in.

when i want new traps down i put them down in october. i find that heat is good and generally collect more crab during warm conditions.

try putting 3 foot lengths of guttering in mud at a 45 degree angle. much easier to collect from.
