Hey Art,
Seen what i thought were bait fish being chased by predators, hopefully bass!, in my local estuary at 1603 on sat. Low tide was about1200 , wicklow head. Is it too early for them? Could it be mullet chasing fish in? they litteraly boiled the surface of the water for about 25 seconds twice, moving in a seaward direction which would be against the flow of the tide at the time. Any thoughts?

immmmm, dave hard to tell, sounds more like macks. anytime i have seen bass attack baitfish in open water it was constant/scattered strikes over quite a large area for several mins. with macks it more of a blitz for 5/10 secs...all open water bass strikes that i have seen have been slashes along the surface.(up to 5/6 ft.) would add that if there are baitfish/macks about then the bass are not to far away.

hi cortaz myself and 3 mates fished 6pm to 8pm no fish landed but one of the lads had slack line and rig was 15 yards up to the right against the tide .not giving up yet will give you a shout for the end of april, cheers

thought i'd post a link here to a table of sun and moon times i've drawn up for march. i live in spain but as i understand cortazs explanation the pattern will be the same anywhere in the world, only remember to take off one hour (these times are shown as gmt +1)

for me this is a great thread, an has helped me get a bit more into the fish. so thanks cortaz! hope this is useful to others planning sessions.

any comments would be welcome - i've tried to make this clear to read and easy to interpret.

so a brief explanation: the vertical axis shows times in 24 hour clock of solar and lunar events (rise, transit and set). the horizontal shows the days of the month. in the graph 'dom' means sunday(my dodgy spanglish!). the times can be read accurately from the stubby horizontal line that appears each day on the daily verticals. i have started to add data for tides in blue ink, though this is less crucial i think. there is a key to the symbols on the right hand side of the page. anything not clear please ask.

yesterday evening between 1900 and 1930 (day of new moon - sun and moon set times coincided at just after 1900!) i got into a big fish possibly conger over the rocks but unfortunately lost it to the rocky ground...
