I have the same problem with mine....must be a fault in them somewhere.

sand/grit.. or the grease in the mechanism has thickened up and is 'sticky'.. open up rinse with hot soapy water, let dry and re-grease it..

ive got to the stage with all my abu's that i strip and clean them after every second trip. seem to be very temprimental!!!!!!!

I have quite a few Abu reels, cant remember the last time any of them let me down...certainly not because of sand or grit stopping them from working....granted they do get sand and git inside and can sound ropey, they do need a strip and a clean now and again.
That said.....the MagElite is a little different in as much as there is a trick to getting the left side plate back on.....in fact the easiest way is to take the right plate off...and centre the spool back in from the right side, then put the right plate back on....shouldn't be a problem.
525Mags and most other reels can be a problem if not reassembled exactly right....take the opportunity to get to know your gear better as your stripping it....bit by bit...lay it out in front of you so the bits go back in the same order as they came off...99% of the time they do....if they don't, then explore further.

as ye are on the topic of mag elites, the entire handle mechanism on my reel is loose where it sits into the side of the reel and often pops out under a load? its bloody annoyin and i cant se the problem, please help!

ya having the same proplem with mine, have to turn the handle them pull out the button. Very annoying.

Thats a new one on me.....is the nut on the left side plate that centres the spool tight enough in ?
Have you had the gears off or the drag washers off ? I cant think of anything else that would cause that kind of problem.....
When you say "pops out" you mean from the side plate or from the handle stem that holds the handle on?
Tom.

the entire handle mechanism(all of it) comes away from the side plate, about 3mm and the gears disengage when this happens. sorry for the por explanations but its as best as i can describe it

Sounds like the little c clip that is under the handle nut is missing and allowing the entire drive train to move up and down on its spindle/post. Worth checking.

Bad news, this is a common problem with the mag elite (I found this out when it happened to mine a year ago)
Good news, it's a doddle to fix.
Open up the right end plate. 'X' marks the offending item on the attached pic. You will need to CAREFULLY bend it slightly (the sticky out bit should be at 90 degrees). What happens it is wears down over time and then does not do the job it is supposed to do, ie engage the gears. Bending it CAREFULLY and slightly will fix it temporarily, but a longer term solution is to order a new part (not expensive). You should get away with bending it once, but if you have to do it again then chances are it will break.
