bait collecting in the dark

Mon Mar 09, 2009 11:25 pm

Hi all,
just a quick question on what peoples opinions are on bait collecting in the dark.Is it more difficult to spot the likes of lug crab etc even with a goodheadlamp, than in daylight .Its just that the next few weeks i'm going to be only able to collect late in the evenings due to a change in my work times.
Apart from the obvious safety aspects with incoming tides etc,is it feesible enough or much harder.

All you need is a good head lamp.

No bother to ya.

and you could add to that your whits about you  a Mobile phone a compass a HH.GPS if you have one and also tell someone when you will be back.
not quite as simple as heading off into the distance with lamp on head and bucket in hand.
you will have to have your tides spot on.
as-well as known bait grounds like the back of your hand.
GPS would be very handy to have during day light times to take coords of your beds as they are not that easy to find when its pitch dark it can be very disorientating
then there is also the chance of a fog falling around you at any time
food for taught

Prefer to collect bait in Darkness myself. Find the worms easier to spot with the shine reflected from the headlight. Crabs are easier to see too.

 the last i heard of you digging in darkness you didn't even bring your headlamp with you, and to make things worse on the following evening tide you forgot it AGAIN

i suppose as you mature and gain experience as a bait digger you will come to the conclusion that the first thing you put in your bucket when digging at night is your lamp then all you have to worry about is your fork and your lift

smog used to be a killer around rings end then they brought out smokless coal  now there is something more sinister roaming them far off bait beds

i see alot of the best times for razor clams for the rest of the year are late pm and early am
it might be a bit harder with a head lamp but i am sure you could still get some
http://www.sailing.ie/inside/default.asp?pageId=506 is good for checking the tides for the rest of the year
