That's the UK B.A.S.S. chart. There's more info on it here:

http://ukbass.com/fishingbits/weightforit.html

The same table also appears inside the back of the new book "B.A.S.S. on Bass", edited by Geoff Gonella.

http://www.anglersbookcase.com/

B.A.S.S. also supply a measuring tape with weight conversions printed on it.

I weighed a few fish this year to compare lengths and weights and I found the above table to be quite accurate. If anything, it very slightly underestimated the fish I've weighed, but only by a few ounces.

A lot of bass anglers I know have taken to talking in cms rather than lbs. It's much easier to carry a little drapers tape with you, measure your fish and return it. Fiddling around with scales and slings wastes valuable fishing time!!

Sure, I'd say it can only be used as an approximate guide.

I had a 51cm bass last week, weighed 3lb 15oz (gutted), so doesnt quite tally up to the table accurately.

Handy to have as a guide though if you have no scales, or release the fish

That chart is way out...a 76cm bass will not weigh 11lbs. The B.A.S.S. society tape is more accurate and indicates that a 76cm bass will weigh just under 10lbs. Matt Spence of B.A.S.S. gave me one of these tapes, but he cautioned that while in general it is accurate there can be upto a 10% variation on weights. I have found this in practice. For example, last month I had a bass that measured 76cm but weighed 9lb 2oz. A couple of days later I had another thicker set fish that measured 74cm but weighed 9lb 14oz. A chart based on the tape would look like this:

Total length (cms) weight (lb)
40 1 lb 8 oz
44 2 lb
51 3 lb
53 3 lb 8 oz
56 4 lb
58 4 lb 8 oz
60 5 lb
62 5 lb 8 oz
64 6 lb
66 6 lb 8 oz
69 7 lb 8 oz
71 8 lb
72 8 lb 6 oz
73 8 lb 12 oz
74 9 lb 2 oz
75 9 lb 8 oz
76 9 lb 14 oz
77 10 lb 5 oz
78 10 lb 11 oz
79 11 lb
80 11 lb 8 oz
81 12 lb
82 12lb 8oz
Measure total length from the nose to the tip of the tail.

Measure total length from the nose to the tip of the tail.

Pat, glad your using the tape, its wise to see you only took the tape to be an indicator of aproximate weight not a true measure (you would not rely on your rev counter to measure your speed). Some mistakes are made that result in ovestimation of fish size with the tape as when measuring total length you do not measure the diagonal length from nose to tip of tail, but lay the tape next to the bass laid on it side, transpose a line down from the tip of the nose to the tape and then measure the distance from this line to the tip of its tail.

Tapes cost 2 pounds, all procedes go to the BASS conservation fighting fund. Its arguably worth joining if you are a UK bass fisherman - and even if you are an Irish based one - for the quarerly magazine alone, let alone for supporting a campaigning group for the benefit of British (and to a degree for Irish) stocks.

I might be guilty of promoting something with this post but it is for the benefit of the bass not my own benefit, so I hope it is deemed acceptable!.

If i measure a bass is it to the tip of the for of the tail or the inside of the two tips??? The part like a sideways V?????

Matt, your tape has proved invaluable. I use it all the time and rarely weigh fish now unless they are very big. Allows me to get the fish back as quickly as possible.

BTW I think you have me sold on B.A.S.S. membership.

For use of the tape or the above chart measure to the tip (the extreme end) of the tail fin, rather than the inside of the fork.

There's a downloadable pdf for bass sizes over here - www.planetseafishing.com/downloads/bass.pdf

Seems not bad for accuracy.

Interesting thread.

Just to throw the Seal amoungst the Bass here  :

I got a 64cm Bass last month and I weighed him as he 'looked' around 6lb but he weighed in at 4lb 2oz on a digital scale which was accurate.
And the fish was in good condition, not too lean.
