Thanks for all the comments lads. It certainly is a fish of a lifetime....a lifetime ambition of mine has been to catch a double on a lure. I've been plug fishing since 1994 and have lost more big fish over that time than I've landed. When you do eventually land that prize it makes it oh so sweet :D .

Some interesting stats on the fish: it measured 82cm & had a girth of 40cm. A fish I had last year was 80cm but had a girth of 43cm and weighed slightly heavier. Just shows the impact of post spawning and what a difference feeding over the summer months will do in terms of weight.

Sorry, Danny, just spotted your question. Yeah, he gave a great fight. At a guess I reckon it took me over 10 minutes to land him. At first I thought it was a schoolie it was coming so easy. The fish I reckon didn't realise it was hooked (nor did I realise what I was hooked into). When it came close to the platform I was on it woke up and exploded on the surface. Its first run was so fierce I was haunted I had the anti-reverse lever dis-engaged for, eventhough, I had the drag set I reckon he might have smashed the line. That run took him right out to the limit of where I can cast with these weighted plugs - 60 yds at a guess. I had several more explosive runs before I finally tamed him.

Donal I was fishing your gilthead mark the other night  , but from the shore. I had a few bass, so was very happy :D . Haven't fished this spot in a few years. Its a great sheltered spot. Any lads fishing the beaches and open coastline that night got blown out of it.
