Donegal bay

Firstly just a quick hello to Johnwest as it was nice meeting you out and about. I saw a boat similar to yours the second day and couldnt get you on channel 8 but couldnt go over to you as I would have broken my chum trail and I was coming up on a mark I previously hit a shark. 2 day trip the weather was ideal boating weather and fishing pretty good too. Firstly lots of macs about to add to chum bag for following day. Lots of decent size pollock, whiting, wrasse and then on to bottom fishing where we caught quite a few flounder and ray, 1 bullhuss and dogs. The second day was a blue shark/porbeagle hunt but unfortunately couldnt quite get out to the preferred area for various reasons but gave it a go anyway and no joy. Spoke to some local charter skippers who tell me the water is still a bit cloudy but the next week or two will see them filling the bay.

How‘s it going, what rigs/tactics did you use for the ray and flounder in the bottom? I’m doing a yacht delivery in two weeks to west cork and want to try get some fishing in where I can though have very little experience when off terra firma. Other than the obvious wrecks on the chart is there anything to look out for that might improve my chances in general?

I just had 2 hook rigs with lots of beads and even a small square of tin foil for flash on a sliding boom on bottom. Bait was 2.5 to 3 inch triangular flappers of fresh caught mack on a nice drift.

Flounder would be an unusual catch from the boat, at least in Donegal bay. Well done on the huss I'm still waiting to get one. Did you catch it on drift or at anchor?

I caught the flounders, some of the ray and huss when I was anchored and the rest of the ray drifting.

Good to meet you too! A nice assortment of species there. I had a few fish myself but overall I thought it was slow enough on my marks.
