Checking out marks on Infomar

Ahoy Landlubbers! I've been browsing through the Infomar website ( https://jetstream.gsi.ie/iwdds/delivery ... ndex.html# ) for the first time in a long while and was mightily impressed with the amount of info available and what you can do with it. Most of the country is covered in great detail revealing structures and other features which are not shown on admiralty charts; high spec. electronics beats a man swinging a lead on a string hands down! I've added a couple of pics to show what I was able to do (and if I could do it.......) .
The first picture shows a rocky structure in acres of featureless sand.
The second shows an east-west profile of the reef from which you can see the minimum and maximum depths and overall length.
Picture three is a north-south profile showing a tidal scour on the north side and shallower water to the south.
Picture four is the reverse of picture 1; an area of what appears to be sand in acres of rock. This is close to shore so the blue area in the bottom right corner is uncharted.
Picture five shows east-west and north-south profiles confirming a sandy bottom with rock all around.
I have picked out a few new marks to investigate this year, if we ever get out.

Yeah, it does look like a wreck, but it's about 400 yds long, i.e. massive, and would surely be well known if it was a wreck.

Nice bit of homework, I never got to grips with the site myself, pc is gone so looking on mobile devices wouldn't be great.

Yes, when you look at in the bigger map that would rule out that.

Screaming out pollack and coalfish on the drift.

Anchoring up on the eastern side of the rock in flooding tide and fishing down into the gullies should be interesting.

A waste of time without the laptop.

When you match it up with a Garmin GPS its streets ahead of anything else out there. Been using it for years and the gps numbers are spot on.

This is a "cut and paste" of a saved track from last year when fishing the lings. It was saved on a Garmin 550 and downloaded on to the laptop using Garmin Home Port. Opened up on the Infomar map of the Cork coast I can look back on my track for the day.

I knew exactly where I was going and what was under me.

Some piece of work.

A few lads down this way changed their gps model after seeing the damage I was doing.

Where it really came into its own is when I started fishing out of Valencia Island uncharted waters and a Garmin that did not have half of the reefs on it or were in the wrong place.

Yep I remember you contacting me about this a few years back Donal, to geg me to do it with my garmin but for some reason never able to manage it.

I "spent/wasted" a bit more time this morning after viewing Donal's work with his Garmin 550. I have stuck with Lowrance over the years as I am reasonably familiar with them. I managed to download my waypoints, opened Infomar in Google Earth and then uploaded the waypoints. The result is shown below where each waypoint is a fish caught. It's a pity I couldn't upload the waypoints directly into Infomar as the colour/definition is a bit better but the current results serve their purpose.

Thanks for that Donal; my waypoints did download as a gpx file. I was trying to say that there doesn't seem to be any way to show them on the infomar maps directly; I had to open infomar in Google Earth and then add the waypoints to Google Earth as well. Still, I got there in the end! I'll have to keep my trails too in future rather than wipe them. Regards, johnwest.

Save the gpx file to your desktop or to a file/folder.
Open your infomar map.
In google earth, click on "Tools" then on "GPS" then "import from file" then "import" if your file do not show up on the screen then locate it and open it.


One other thing, that is if you have not done it already, you might need to change the lat/long set up on Google earth to match the ones on your gps.
Click on "Tools" --- "Options" and change them in the box marked "Show Lat/Long"
