Postby Rampent Wreckfish » Mon Jan 19, 2009 11:39 am

Hi Dave

That is a three bearded rockling
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

KStaff winning matches is the new black.

3bearded are not marbled and have distinctive black marks along the dorsal.

They sure are marbled steve and look at the mouth on the fish its much bigger than a shore rockling.

i have caught enough of them in my time to know the difference.

Its definitly a three bearded rockling .

Lads the shore rockling has a smaller mouth than the 3 bearded in relation to its body.

 Its always the same when it comes to identifying Rockling

I'm certainly no expert when it comes to differentiating Rockling species and am open to correction on this one but it does look like a Shore Rockling to me.

I just had look through the photos from the other night and found another one of the Rockling, perhaps this might help clarify which species it is?

in both cases it has three beards - god wouldnt it be so handy if the shore rocklling just had 7 beards and this argument would never happen

on first view i thought 3 bearded - but then it didnt have large patches of dark mottling - 3 bearded usually have a more vibrant orange colour which seems to be the case - however seeing it in your hand it looks small enough - which has me thinking very orange shore rockling

that really helps doesnt it 8)
