Low water 11:30, Conditions were t-shirt and sunglasses. 8)

With a few crab starting to pop I decided to have a bash at fishing the wall.
Normally I would wait until after the long week-end but as I had been picking up a cod or two around the shore inside the harbour during the summer it was worth a go. Anyway where else could get a lazier session than the wall.

Started fishing about 12:00 with the first 3 cast just getting a few small taps and the hooks coming in cleaned from crabs. As the tide started to pick up the first cod came a knocking. So in a 45 minute burst I landed 5 small cod the smallest been 26cm and a wake-up call to the shite that is in the sea.

when I lifted the one over the wall it looked out of shape with a long skinny body compared to the size of its head. What I thought first was a big lump of crab turned out to be two bits of hard plastic

Should the cod have headed up the river bow to the usual spots - Ferrypoint etc are do they hang around in the estuary for a while 1st? Earliest I have ever been down is Nov.

Does anyone have a contact for someone I can get crab from in Youghal. Always used to buy off a guy called Eddy but not been down in about 3 years so not sure if he's still doing it and have lost his number. I'd prefer live but frozen will do. PM me if you prefer. Thanks.

Hit Ferrypoint this morning for low water. Nothing for the first hour but the crabs were very polite and cleaned and shined my hooks for me. :x
Then a 13:00 a bit of a push came on the tide and I hit 6 cod on the trot packed up the gear at 14:00. :D

group shot 28.10.19.jpg

Headed up the river but got destroyed by weed. The amount and size of trees and logs going up the river was mad. It was not worth the risk of loosing a rod and reel, one blink and they would be gone.
Headed back to Ferrypoint for the last hour of the flood added another 6 cod and a whiting.
The 3 dog rule then came into play :? :? :( :( :( so I was out of there

P.S. the 3 dog rule is "if I catch 3 dogs on the trot it was time to go home"

I'm going to have to hire a car. I can't see anywhere in Youghal online. Does anyone know if there is a car hire company in Youghal or will I have to pick one up in Dungarvan, I know there's one there.
Also, has anyone fished The Carpets yet and do you know if it'll be open this weekend?

Thanks.

Not a good plan without crab.
Lug on its own should have caught a cod or two. While fishing for cod I'd never mix lug with fish baits. It's lug on its own or lug + crab or lug + mussel
Mussel is a good back up bait if you can't get crab again don't mix it with fish baits. If you can get into any of the boat marinas there are plenty of mussel to be picked on the floating legs.

To clarify, I was fishing one rod with just lug, I was using the fish baits on the other rod.

Good shout on the mussels.
