Flat things and weever stings

I haven't had sand under my feet for a while as I had been chasing triggerfish unsuccessfully over the rocks in September. I decided to hit the beach for an hour for a change.

Set up quickly and got a few baits out. You can see a lad spinning out by the river which was carrying a lot of rainwater.

An offshore wind but with enough undertow and wave to keep things lively.

Baits were simply lug with a decent strip of mackeral on the bottom hook.

Rigs were fairly light 3 hook flappers. The baits were flicked out initially on a 5oz. double pyramid. Nothing after a few minutes so dropped my lead size to 4oz. This moved a little more but after a few minutes still no fish.

I dropped to a 3 oz plain lead and cast closer into the white water. This was better- the rig began to travel slowly from left to right. A few nips and plucks on the tip over the next few minutes and a nice bit of resistance on retrieve- result :)

There is a weever on the middle hook just beside the mackeral strip.

I thought this is it there will hopefully be a few more fish about but it was all short lived. A double on the next cast included a 30cm + flounder along with another weever.

A few casts later and only one more weever to my name it was time to go.

I never got any pic's of the weevers as they were quick to bury themselves back in the sand. I used a forceps to pick them up and put them back in the sea. The amount of people that swim on the beach right where the weevers are and don't get stung is baffling?!

Hi m.b.3, you got a few fish for your trouble but I was expecting some mention of sore hands, pain etc? I had a similar day out a while back with lots of weevers and small flatties, I couldn't upload any pics but did provide a link to youtube video of one burying itself,
http://youtube.com/watch?v=E2cs2BVJLkk . Have you ever tried maddies on that beach, I've found they can work well.

I get them weavers on one or two beaches down this way also.

Got stung at a SAI on Ballybrannigan a few years back a cigarette lighter from Stevecrow sorted it out. Since then I've always had a cigarette lighter in the tackle box.

Sorry I meant to say it always amazes me how many people swim in these spots and rarely get stung. Cool video. I have no doubt maddies would work well but I had to just go get lug and get fishing quick. It might sound lazy but unless I am fishing for mullet if i am digging maddies its not pleasure fishing!
