Help on lure/spinning for pollock

Postby jono,b » Thu Aug 01, 2013 3:20 pm

Lads, i recently got into spinning for pollock and have been successful so i am loving it. I live near the coast and a few nice rocky areas so its handy for me to get out for a hour or 2 in the evening

I have a few question regarding spinning / lure fishing for pollock regards spinners and plastics etc...
what lures/methods do you find successful for pollock.

I know rocky deep ground is good, but what conditions?? tides?? i hear dusk is good??
I am just looking for a few general tips as i am new to this type of fishing and as i say really enjoying it at the moment.

Thanks.
Jono

Light levels are key. Deep water will provide the correct light levels during the day. But in general dusk is best.
Pollack will hit anything really, micro lures (small spinners) in 10/20gr seem most effective.

They also seem to prefer bright coloured metal lures, orange, red or green are best. Kiltys are Great for them and they do them in those colours too.
A bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office!

Thanks lads, i have a few kilty's in the bag.. i am thinking of getting out on saturday evening, tide is full 10pm ish.. so will fish about 7-9 as long as its safe on the rocks regarding the light and visability for footing.

i find weedless soft plastics catch just as many pollock as metal lures do. plus you can fish them right down into the kelp and not have to worry about losing gear. this can be an effective tactic in brighter conditions when they are a little bit too shy to come off the bottom. i will try to get a pic up later of the way i like to rig them.

Lures: Fire tail jelly worms with a one oz jig head or a weedless hook with a 1oz Weight. Time: dawn is best when the resident pollack are feeding around the 1-3lb mark and the bigger seol pollack will pass through that will take almost anything, marks: deep water kelp and rocks, and If there's no pollack around there always wrasse close by :)

It was a small japanese lure, yellow with orange and silver, i was trying bright silver spinners for the first 2 hours and not a tap, changed to the japanese fella and got a small pollock on the second cast, after about a half hour i moved a few meters and got the cod on the first cast...

P.s the plastic is off the cork handle now :)

And a lick of clear varnish on the cork to stop it from flaking off!!
