Spinning Set Up

Hi Guys,

I have recently bought a few lures soft & hard and I want to focus on spinning for a while. I currently have a Daiwa Proteus 11ft spinning rod with a casting weight of 20g-60g (heavy action). I was thinking of loading my reel with some 20 or 30lb braid, its a small Daiwa Crossfire 4000. Would this set up be suitable and allow me to:

1. Get a good casting distance?
2. Have a good control of the lure in the water?

I have been reading up on how to jig,twitch, walk the dog etc, so ideally I would like to use these techniques.

My twopence worth!

You could try it out and see. I think that you will find the rod is probably a bit heavy and maybe even long. If you are going to be casting heavy plugs or heavy leadheads it may do fine.

Maybe take a look at some of the modern lure rods. Some are very well priced. The Surecatch Salty Spin is less than €60 and is a cracking rod to experiment with. The Bushwhackers are inexpensive. Many guys are using Teklons. The Pezon et Michel Gunki Hayashi SW is a beautiful rod. Up the scale the Illex Element Rider is off the scale! All these are 2.1m but some are available in 2.4m if you prefer the extra length.

Watch the diameters of the braid you use. If you can get 20lb at .13mm or thereabouts you will get superb distance. Even Nanofil might be worth a look.You will find that you will enjoy your fishing more and can experiment with the lighter lures etc.

I thought the rod might be a bit heavy. I'l have a look at the ones you suggested. Most of the lure fishing I will be doing will be with soft plastics & jig heads and surface poppers. Are casting weights generally reflected by the length of the rod?
