Poor hook up rate with Feed Shallow

Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:23 pm

Has anyone else had problems with poor hook up rate with the Feed Shallow? Of the first 4 knocks I had on it, 3 hooked up. Since then I had about 4 knocks on it and no hook ups. One time I pulled it in and there was a scale on one of the hooks. The last time I saw the fish follow the lure right in to the rocks I was standing on. I stalled the lure for a second and then reeled again and he went for it but unconvincingly. He defo connected cause I felt it but straight away turned and off he went unimpressed!(Presumably he had seen me by this stage too!) .... heart in mouth moment followed by straightforward heartbreak when I blanked!
Could it be the hooks or the way I'm retrieving it ( I normaly retrieve slowly enough so thats its swimming at about a ft and, speed up slow down, the odd twitch etc). I've heard the hooks aren't great on them but I though the complaint was the strength of them as opposed to how sharp they are. Can anyone recommend good replacement trebles maybe?

Hooks could be blunt id say , either replace or sharpen and keep a sharpening tool with you at least if you know your hooks are in good nick its one less thing to consider

No bother , you can buy specific hook sharpeners in most good tackle shops and no harm having spare trebles, kamasan do packs of ten so if you break a trebble your not endinf
g a session early.

Probably too harsh but Im open for correction. The hook ones are usually between ten and fifteen euro so shouldnt break the bank

from what i hear the fish at this time of year are full of bait..
they may chase your lure out of aggression and not hunger...it happens alot to me recently with fish trying to nip or half heartedly hitting the lure..i understand your frustration but your not the only one..
unless your hooks are blunt as feck...when the fish are really hungry they may bend your hook on the feed shalow but you should still get a hook up.

Change your hooks mate. The trebles that these expensive lures come with are sh$te and i always replace them with owner or decoy trebles. A big bass will make short work of them believe me!!!!

Cheers

Mark.

Cheers for the replies, Got some owner size 6 trebles and stuck them on and got a hook sharpener and went over my other lures for good measure....that's one less excuse now eh!

I had this discussion with a well know tackle dealer. I told him I had lost a lovely Bass on the Tackle House Feed Shallow the hook was bent. I told him the hooks are crap and I'm going to change them, he said the hooks on them lures are perfect and i was wasting my time changing them I'm stil not convinced.

Some lures have poor hook ups, best easiest solution is to add a second split ring on the back treble hook

When you think of it, the Feed Shallow is what it is - a shallow running lure. You will often find that bass will hit a surface lure and not hook up the first time (or second or third... :D ). Could just be the same thing with the feed shallow - the fish are coming from deeper to hit the lure and miss occasionally. I have never had great success with the Feed Shallow from the boat. I get more consistency from the Node - itself a shallow diver.
No harm to keep the hooks sharp in any case.

After the end of the season, when you probably need to change the hooks anyway, do change them!!! Try Owner ST-46 in size 5.

I would say you've been unlucky. Hooks are worth changing tho, I have had a few of them straightened too easily. I find Owners are good.
