Metal Or Hard Plastic

I was hoping some of the forum members could share your thoughts on whether you would prefer using Metal lures like Kiltys ,Spoons and Tobys or Hard Plastic diving lures.

The reason why I ask this is because I had very interesting conversation not so long ago with an old boy who said back in the seventies and eighties all he ever used to catch Bass were large Spoons and ABU Kosters that were cast across the tide and allowed to flutter and was a technique adopted from Salmon fishing he mentioned that he never used Plugs as they were not available in the local tackle shops back then , I have used Kosters on a boat fishing over reefs but never from the shore and I have noticed that the Irish anglers use a lot of different Metal lures and had good results with them, you very rarely see anyone using metals these days round my way so I would appreciate your replies.

If they caught fish back in the 70s, then no doubt they'll still catch fish today.

But there was a lot more fish around in the 70s.

they are just different tools for different jobs, a metal lure will cast far but sink quickly so
could be used for fish a long way from you, on the other hand if the fish are near
you and the area is snaggy and shallow a plug that swims say 12 inches below the surface might be
better

If I am honest I dont want to use metal 'door handle' lures, I would much rather use a surface lure or soft plastics but time after time I have used all the 'nice' lures without a fish and then caught on a €5 lump of metal when everything else has failed. Up here in North Clare metal lures take the majority of the fish I hear about. I am not sure we have the same volume of lure only anglers or new generation lure fishermen as they get on the East coast so I am not certain if this would affect the outcome.

Strangely there seems to be a mindset that bass wont eat last years lures. If you don't buy the newest ones you wont catch any more fish! Coupled to that is the equation that newer lures will catch more fish - if thats the case my catch rates should show a constant improving return on numbers over the last ten years - IF i bought this years newest trends........


ABU krills, Kosters, Tobies, and the like STILL catch a whole lotta fish - lure fishing offers a range of presentation types and positions which is much more valuable - add size variations and shape and then you're set for life
