sea trout problem's

Ok got a bit of a problem. Getting a few of them at the moment on small lures. The problem is the stitching up of there mouths with the trebles on the spinners. Have tried single hooks but no hook ups just getting the lure banged and there gone. Hook up rate is about 99% with the trebles. Now the thing is I return all of them and starting to feel that iam doing to much damage to them. Have crushed the barbs down but with all 3 points embedded I cant get there mouths open to get at the hook! Trebles size is 6 to 8s

Hi Tom

Thats a big problem with seatrout with such soft mouths/flesh while at sea.

I find exactly the same problem using size 6 and 8 trebles.

I use some small Smith micro lures many of which are rigged with single hooks only and i havent noticed a significant drop in hook up rate per number of hits with them.

The reason i feel is that the single hook is attached to the lure using a very short piece of a kind of braided material. like the material used to attach an assist hook on a metal jig. This gives the single hook more freedom to move around when the trout hits the lure.

I think trout bite the lure in an agressive and head shaking manner whereas bass tend to suck in the lure, this and the soft mouth is what makes the seatrout hard to hook up.

I also find that a rod with a soft tip helps on the hookup.

hope this helps you hook up more and i know how you feel about the damage inflicted with trebles

Will put up a picture tomorrow
