storm chug bugs

Puchased 2 of these today and gave them a bash but was getting more height than distance could have been the fact the weather today is atrocious and was just wondering if anybody had any tips about getting some extra casting distance on these .Is it possible to add some extra weight ie for shore casting from beach or rocks, would the extra weight prevent the plug from skipping over surface .Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO these lures are crap. I was really trying them last year. Minor results. Casting distance is a crap - usually you really have to wade to use them. And worst of all, the rattle was driving me spastic. Do you have rattling version? One way or another this lure ended up at the very bottom of my large collection of unused tackle.

I find the Team Daiwa lures very good here, they have a sliding-weight long casting system built in, which sends them flying to the horizon if you wish and they do actually catch fish too and not just anglers .

Will give it my best shot as you are well aware the weather was really bad today with wind in my face and was taking lots of slack line off my reel with the chug gettin plenty of air but no distance.Will be casting low next outing .

Going by previous reviews on SAI these lures have been successful for certain individuals on here Tommy.In regards of wading wont be delving too far into the waves just yet.And yes i do have the rattle ones lol.You say you had minor results any feedback would be nice to hear about.I hope it works too.

Ironically i have one of these in gold still in the pack haven,t got a chance to use it yet might give it a bash on my next adventure.Need something with a bit of weight to get the extra distance ,is this a surface popper Austrian.

The Chug Bug is a surface popper. It's actually supposed to skip accross the surface creating a disturbance, similar to that of an injured fish.

Very common used over really shallow rough ground and rockpools filled by the tide for bass.

I've only ever caught one bass on them but I've had half a dozen "hits". One of the hits I got was from a bass down on forlorn point in Kilmore Quay, the fish hit the lure about 20 feet from where i was and knocked it clear of the water onto the rock where i was standing. Savage stuff.

Thx Alby so in theory its not so much about distance and more about finding calm shallow rocky areas were bass are patrolling.I,d say you were left breathless when the lure landed on the rock !!!

Now ye have it

I always found an incoming tide at change of light (Dawn or Dusk) to be best. It's a great time of the year to target bass on the plugs now too, enjoy!!

Yeah I know. I heard that as well and that was the only reason I spent time trying this lure. It doesn’t work for me. I’m usually using slowly sinking or suspending, pull-bait lures. If we talking surface poppers I prefer yozuri mag poppers, but I’m not happy with them as well. Maybe it's just me.

i cant catch fish on surface poppers to save my life.........

I have had one bass on a surface fly popper "gurgler"
I think the prob is definately ME!

Could be the end of the beginning for chug bugs for me lost one this evening got snagged on rocks wasn,t going to risk the 2nd one i bought,so went back to the good ole spinners.Will try the chug again without as many rocks around next time.

I rate the chugs very highly and are one of the most sucessful lures Iv ever used especially round this time of the year, Jim has some great tips there re surface fishing always found myself that alot of the fish took the chug bug as it was sitting idle on the surface just after you cause a lot of comotion with it....dont strike
The chug bug was my number one surface lure until I tryed the patchinko....
Stick with the chug bug it will work when you find yourself in the right place at the right time enjoy it!!! best way to catch them is on the surface.....ahhh I cant wait for the morning

Most bass fishermen have used them at some time or other - one of my favourite things to do with them is to join two of the smaller ones with a split ring and create a 'jointed' surface lure ! - its funny some lures fall in and out of fashion very quickly this seems to be one of them - ok I know its not the best but its still very good on its day with the right technique - the thing is i've seen hundeds of fish caught on it but I dont like the lure myself - for no particular reason - but as a person whose job it is to put fish on the end of peoples lines this one is always in the box!
